The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are about to run out their software update clock. Combining two of Google’s own support pages shows the promised five years of updates for these phones closes next month, in October 2026.
How the October 2026 Window Was Worked Out
Google’s Pixel software-update policy page groups the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Pixel Fold together. Google promises this group 5 years of updates, counted from when the device first went on sale on the Google Store in the US. That covers both OS updates and security patches.
Google’s separate device-availability table lists exactly when that clock started. Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro show October 2021 as their US Google Store launch month. Five years on from that puts the end of their update window in October 2026, next month.
That October 2026 date is not a sentence Google has published anywhere. It’s androidpure’s own math, built by combining Google’s 5-year policy with Google’s own launch-month table. Google states only a month, not a specific day. Treat “October 2026” as a window, not a fixed cutoff date.

Which Pixel 6-Era Phones This Covers

The Pixel 6a is not in the same boat yet. Google’s table lists its US Google Store availability as July 2022, nine months later than its two siblings. Its own five-year window runs into mid-2027. Don’t lump it in with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro just because the three phones share a support-page grouping.
What Comes After Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
Every Pixel starting with the Pixel 8 gets 7 years of updates from its US Google Store launch date. That’s two years longer than the policy covering the Pixel 6 generation. That longer window is Google’s current standard, not something the Pixel 6 series was ever promised. Anyone still holding a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro is aging out on the terms Google set five years ago, not getting cut off early.
One open question the Google pages don’t answer: which release actually turns out to be each phone’s last update. Android 17 QPR1, the next scheduled Pixel Feature Drop, had not been announced as of this writing. It isn’t yet clear whether Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners will see it before their window closes.
If you’re still using a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro, this is a reasonable point to start planning a replacement. Once the update window closes, the phone keeps working, but it stops receiving the monthly security patches that protect it against newly discovered vulnerabilities.
