Apple’s First Touchscreen Mac Is a $2,899 OLED MacBook Pro

Apple has launched its first touchscreen Mac. The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display pairs a tandem OLED panel with touch input and a Dynamic Island. In the US, it starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch.

Pre-orders opened on October 28 in 30 countries and regions, including the US. Deliveries and in-store availability begin Friday, November 6.

How Touch Works on the MacBook Pro PROLED XDR

The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel. macOS translates touches into clicks, so many existing apps work with touch right away. A new hinge is designed to keep the screen steady while you tap it.

“The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is a monumental step forward for the Mac,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer.

The Dynamic Island at the top of the screen holds Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. There is a catch in Apple’s footnotes, though. Spotlight only moves into the Dynamic Island if Siri AI is available and turned on.

Siri AI itself comes with limits. Apple’s release says server-side Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, are subject to daily usage limits. Apple also says expanded access to those features will cost a fee in the future. On a laptop that starts at $2,899, buyers should know some AI use is capped and a paid tier is already planned.

Pricing and Availability

Each touch model costs $400 more than the matching non-touch M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro, according to MacRumors. That non-touch MacBook Pro stays on sale in Apple’s store. The 16-inch non-touch model, for example, starts at $2,999.

  • 14-inch, M5 Pro: from $2,899 ($2,749 education)
  • 16-inch, M5 Pro: from $3,399 ($3,199 education)
  • 14-inch, M5 Max: from $4,499 ($4,199 education)
  • 16-inch, M5 Max: from $4,799 ($4,499 education)

Orders are open on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. In the US, Apple Upgrade leasing starts at $55.99 a month for 36 months, before taxes and trade-in. If you plan to trade in an older Mac, Apple recently raised its US trade-in values for most Macs.

Maxing out the configuration gets expensive fast. MacRumors puts a fully loaded 14-inch model at $14,249 and the 16-inch at $14,549. The 16TB SSD alone is a $7,000 option on the top M5 Max build.

An Older Chip Behind the Newer Display

The OLED MacBook Pro runs M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, not M6. Apple put the M6 in the cheaper 14-inch MacBook Pro it refreshed a day earlier. For now, buyers have to choose between the newest chip and the newest display.

Specifications

Apple says both sizes are lighter than before. The 14-inch weighs 3 lb, which is half a pound less. The 16-inch weighs 4 lb, a drop of 0.7 lb. The display reaches up to 2000 nits for both HDR and SDR content. An optional nano-texture finish is now etched into the cover glass.

The memory, storage and battery figures below are ceilings for higher configurations, not what the $2,899 base model gets.

  • Display: 14.2-inch or 16.3-inch tandem OLED with touch, 10Hz–120Hz ProMotion, P3 and Adobe RGB
  • Base 14-inch (M5 Pro): 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD (per MacRumors)
  • Base 16-inch (M5 Pro): 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD (per MacRumors)
  • Maximum configuration: up to 128GB unified memory and up to 16TB storage
  • Battery: up to 24 hours, per Apple’s testing
  • Ports: three Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC slot, MagSafe, headphone jack
  • External displays: up to three with M5 Pro, up to four with M5 Max
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via Apple’s N1 chip
  • Camera and audio: 12MP Center Stage camera, six-speaker system
  • Security and software: Touch ID, macOS 27
