Garena has launched Free Fire India, a separate version of Free Fire built for Indian players on Android and iOS. It arrives more than four years after the government banned the original game in February 2022.
The new version adds parental controls and playtime limits. It also brings spending caps, and Garena says player data is stored on servers in India.

The game is free on Google Play, listed under Garena International III. The listing rates it for ages 12 and up, and it includes in-app purchases.
What’s Different in Free Fire India
Garena has built the localized version around controls for younger players. Based on Garena’s announcement as reported by TechCrunch and IT之家, it adds the following:
- Parental controls: including parental consent
- Playtime limits: with regular break reminders
- Spending caps: limits on in-game spending
- Local data storage: player data hosted on servers in India, per Garena
- India-specific content: such as a new localized loading screen
The coverage we reviewed didn’t detail the exact playtime limits or spending-cap amounts.
These controls are more than a goodwill gesture. Garena says it worked with relevant Indian government authorities and incorporated their feedback, TechCrunch reports. In Garena’s own account, then, the safeguards are part of how the game made it back to India.
According to IT之家, Garena has also optimized the game for phones with a range of hardware specs. A Diwali-themed in-game event runs until November 15.
Free Fire MAX Stays Available
Free Fire MAX isn’t being replaced. Garena India head of operations Vaibhav Das Mundhra told TechCrunch that players can use the same account across both games. They can also play together and join the same events.
Mundhra did not say why the planned 2023 launch was delayed or what has changed since, according to TechCrunch.
How Free Fire India Got Here
The original Free Fire was among 54 apps India banned in February 2022 over national-security concerns. Garena then announced Free Fire India for a September 2023 release, before postponing it.
The audience is still large. TechCrunch, citing Sensor Tower data it reviewed, says the Free Fire franchise had about 77.4 million monthly active users in India in June. BGMI had 20.8 million in the same period.
The competition is not standing still either. BGMI Lite is confirmed for an India launch by the end of 2026.
