Spotify’s AI Remix Add-On Could Cost $4 to $5 a Month, FT Reports

Spotify’s planned AI tool for fan-made covers and remixes would reportedly cost Premium subscribers an extra $4 to $5 a month. The figure comes from the Financial Times, which says Spotify is aiming to launch the tool in the first quarter of 2027. Neither the price nor the date is final, and Spotify hasn’t confirmed either one.

This is an optional add-on, not a Premium price increase. The report doesn’t change what Premium itself costs. The remix tool would be a separate monthly charge for subscribers who choose it.

What Spotify has confirmed about the AI remix tool

The paid model is not a rumor. In its October 20 announcement of a licensing deal with Believe, Spotify said the tool is designed as a paid add-on for Premium subscribers. It pitched the extra fee as a new revenue stream for participating artists and songwriters. Spotify’s May 21 deal announcement with Universal Music Group also said the tool would launch as a paid Premium add-on.

The tool remixes and covers existing songs. Spotify says it is not meant for generating entirely new tracks. Royalties go to the original artists and rights holders. Plays of a remix also count toward the original song in Spotify’s charts, according to The Next Web.

Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s SVP and Global Head of Music, made the company’s case in the Believe announcement:

Done right, fan creativity can deepen the connection between fans and the artists they love, creating new value for artists and driving attention back to the original music.

That is Spotify’s pitch. Whether listeners see enough value in it to pay extra every month is a separate question.

Which labels have signed

Spotify has announced deals with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt and Believe. Believe’s agreement also covers its TuneCore distribution service. Sony Music and Warner Music are still negotiating, according to the FT as reported by The Next Web.

A label deal doesn’t automatically put that label’s songs in the tool. Each artist has to opt in, even when their label has signed. Believe and TuneCore artists go through a two-step consent process, according to Spotify.

That leaves an open question for anyone weighing the fee. With two major labels unsigned and every artist required to opt in, how much of your library will be remixable at launch? That answer may not be clear until the tool arrives.

What the add-on would cost on top of Premium

Spotify Premium Individual costs $12.99 a month in the US. By our arithmetic, a $4 to $5 add-on would push that to about $17 to $18 a month. That is an increase of roughly 31% to 38% for anyone who takes it.

The FT also reports that Spotify could unveil the tool around the Grammy Awards in February. The launch timing is still under discussion, according to the report.

Demand may stay limited. Bernstein analyst Ian Moore estimates that 7% to 8% of Spotify’s US subscribers could sign up by the end of 2028, Android Authority reports. Spotify has also launched paid podcast memberships in 34 regions.
