If the speedometer disappeared from Google Maps on your Android Auto display this week, it is not a bug. Google has now explained why. Android Authority reports that Mishaal Rahman, a Googler and former Android Authority editor, checked with the Android Auto product team. He did so after users started reporting the missing readout. The short answer: set a destination, and it comes back.
Google began rolling out a live speedometer for Google Maps on Android Auto back in July. It shows your current speed next to the posted limit and turns yellow or red if you go over it. Some users who had the feature working without a destination set suddenly found it gone, and assumed Google had pulled it. According to Rahman, that read on the situation was wrong.
What Google actually said
Rahman’s explanation, as reported by Android Authority: “I spoke with a member of the Android Auto product team and was informed that the ability to have the speedometer, speed limit, and traffic signals/stop signs showing without a destination set is still rolling out. Thus, not everyone will have this particular feature yet.”
In other words, showing the speedometer without an active route was always a separate, narrower rollout. It is not the same as the core speedometer feature. Some users had it briefly, likely as part of a staged test. They lost it again as that specific rollout paused or reverted for their account. The speedometer tied to active navigation, with a destination punched in, is the version Google considers fully live.
How to get it back
Set a destination in Google Maps before you start driving. The speedometer, speed limit badge, and traffic-sign warnings should appear once navigation is active. Keep both the Google Maps app and Android Auto updated to their latest versions. Google is still expanding the no-destination version of the feature in phases. There is no published timeline for when that broader version reaches everyone.
