Sony has started rolling out Android 17 to the Xperia 1 VII, beginning in Europe. The update is build 71.2.A.2.35 with the October 1, 2026 security patch. Both kunkoku.jp, a Sony-focused Japanese site, and GSMArena report the rollout.
By kunkoku’s count, that leaves the Xperia 1 VI as the only one of Sony’s five eligible phones still waiting.

Sony’s Android 17 support page lists five eligible Xperia phones and says the schedule varies by device. That page doesn’t list rollout dates as of Oct 22. The status below follows kunkoku’s list for overseas models.

The Xperia 1 VI and Japanese models are behind
The Xperia 1 VI was Sony’s 2024 flagship, yet it’s last in line among the eligible phones. Japanese buyers of the Xperia 1 VII are further behind still. Per kunkoku, NTT Docomo, au and SIM-free units are still on build 71.1.A.2.248. They haven’t even received 71.1.A.2.265, the overseas build from September.
What Android 17 brings to the Xperia 1 VII
Sony’s support page lists these changes for the Xperia 1 VII:
- Desktop mode: use the phone with an external display, listed for the Xperia 1 VIII, 1 VII and 1 VI
- Quick settings: tiles can be resized and rearranged
- Wallpaper and style: refreshed wallpaper and clock designs, plus custom icon shapes and styles
- Screen recording: record one app or the full screen, capturing device and mic audio together
AirDrop support in Quick Share and AI Camera Assistant custom looks are listed for the Xperia 1 VIII only. Xperia 1 VII owners shouldn’t expect them.
How to get the update
Users report the download is about 1.1GB, according to GSMArena. It started in Europe, and GSMArena says other regions are expected in the following days. Check for a system update in your phone’s Settings app, and install it on Wi-Fi with a decent charge.
