Sony Android 17 Update Reaches Only Five Xperia Phones

Sony has posted its Android 17 overview, and the eligible list is short: five Xperia phones. That is the whole official roster so far — not a staggered teaser with more models “coming later” named on the page.

The write-up lives on Sony’s UK support site. It walks through Desktop mode, a refreshed Quick Settings panel, lock screen and home screen customization, easier screen recording, and — on the Xperia 1 VIII only — extra camera looks. The company is clear that schedules and features still vary by device.

With Android 17, you can now use Desktop mode with an external display on supported Xperia models. Customization options have been expanded for the Quick settings panel, Lock screen, and Home screen. Android 17 also makes screen recording easier. Together, these updates provide a more efficient and seamless experience when using your Xperia.

That wording is from Sony’s own Android 17 support article.

Which Xperia phones get Android 17

Sony’s eligible list, as published:

  • Xperia 1 VIII
  • Xperia 1 VII
  • Xperia 1 VI
  • Xperia 10 VIII
  • Xperia 10 VII

No other Xperia model is named. If your phone is not on that list, there is no official Android 17 promise on this page to wait for.

What actually changes

Desktop mode — plug a supported Xperia into an external display and run multiple apps with a keyboard and mouse — is called out for the Xperia 1 VIII, 1 VII, and 1 VI only. The 10-series phones are on the OS list, not that desktop-mode line.

Wallpaper & style picks up new wallpaper and clock designs, plus icon shape and style controls. Quick Settings tiles can be resized and rearranged, with short descriptions on the larger tiles. Screen recording can capture the whole display or a single app, and it can record device audio and the microphone together.

The Xperia 1 VIII also gets an upgraded AI Camera Assistant in Photo mode: up to three named custom looks, so a landscape grade and a food grade are a tap apart instead of a reset. That is the one Sony-only extra in this drop; most of the rest tracks what Android 17 already does on Pixel.

Rollout

Sony says the update schedule varies by device. 9to5Google reports Xperia 1 VIII units in the UK are already receiving it. Everyone else on the list should treat that as a start gun, not a guarantee their unit is next.

The 1 VIII is still the odd Xperia flagship that kept a microSD slot and a headphone jack — we covered that hardware stance when the phone launched. Android 17 does not change those choices; it just decides how much longer the software side stays current.

Check Settings → System → Software update on an eligible phone, and keep an eye on Sony’s support article rather than reseller blogs for any later additions to the list.
