Sony Xperia 10 VI Won’t Get Android 17, Citing Storage Limits

Sony says the Xperia 10 VI, its 2024 mid-range phone, will not get Android 17. In a customer notice last updated on October 15, 2026, Sony points to the phone’s storage configuration as the reason. It also says its four-year security update commitment for the phone is unchanged.

Why the Xperia 10 VI won’t get Android 17

Sony’s notice says it announced three Android OS upgrades when the Xperia 10 VI launched. The UK customer notice, support article 00413319, then explains why Android 17 is off the table:

However, after a detailed technical assessment, we determined that due to limitations related to the device’s storage configuration, the Xperia 10 VI does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate.

Sony admits the decision falls short of what it announced at launch, and it apologises to owners. The company says the issue is specific to the 10 VI and will not affect other Xperia models. The notice does not explain what about the storage setup causes the problem.

The notice also does not name the three promised versions. GSMArena lists Android 14 as the phone’s launch software. It reported the stable Android 16 update for the 10 VI on October 24, 2025. By that count, Android 17 would have been the third and final promised upgrade. That is our reading of the timeline, not Sony’s wording.

Sony Xperia 10 VI specifications

The phone sits in Sony’s mid-range line, a step below the flagship Xperia 1 series. These are the key details, per GSMArena’s spec listing:

  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1
  • Memory: 8GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • Launch: announced May 15, 2024, released June 13, 2024
  • Software: Android 14 at launch, now on Android 16

Which Sony phones get Android 17

In September, Sony’s Android 17 list named only five Xperia phones. The Xperia 10 VI was not among them, and the new notice now makes its status official.

Not getting Android 17:

  • Xperia 10 VI (2024): promised three OS upgrades at launch, and by our count it ends on two

Sony’s own notice concedes that this falls short of its launch promise. Owners bought the phone on a three-upgrade commitment and are losing the last one while the phone is still inside its security window. The notice offers an apology but describes no alternative upgrade path.

Getting Android 17, per our September report:

  • Xperia 1 series: Xperia 1 VIII, Xperia 1 VII, Xperia 1 VI
  • Xperia 10 series: Xperia 10 VIII, Xperia 10 VII

What happens next for Xperia 10 VI owners

Sony says security updates continue for four years from launch. With a June 2024 release, that points to roughly mid-2028, though that date is our estimate rather than Sony’s. Until then, the phone stays on Android 16 with ongoing security patches.

The notice appears on Sony’s UK support site. It does not say which other countries it applies to. Owners elsewhere should check their local Sony support page for any regional version of the notice.
