How to Add Your Ohio State ID to Google Wallet on Android

Google Wallet now accepts Ohio state IDs and driver’s licences on Android, ending a ten-month gap since the last state was added. If you live in Ohio, you can scan your physical card into the app today and use it at supported TSA checkpoints. Here is exactly how to add your Ohio state ID to Google Wallet, what the state sees during setup, and what the digital version still cannot do for you.

Before you start: what your phone needs

Digital ID has stricter requirements than a boarding pass or a payment card. Check these first, because the option will not appear otherwise:

  • Android 8 or newer on the device you want to carry the ID on
  • A screen lock set up — PIN, pattern, password or biometric
  • Bluetooth enabled, since the ID is transmitted over Bluetooth rather than handed over
  • Nearby devices permission granted to Google Wallet
  • Your physical Ohio card in hand, front and back

How to add your Ohio state ID to Google Wallet

  1. Open the Google Wallet app on your Android phone.
  2. Tap the plus button next to “View more” at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select IDs & personal info.
  4. Tap Driver’s license or state ID, then pick Ohio from the list. The card art uses the Northern Cardinal, Ohio’s state bird, so you will know when you have the right one.
  5. Photograph the front and back of your physical card when prompted.
  6. Record the short face video. This is the step worth pausing on. The video is sent to the Ohio BMV for verification, not just processed on your phone.
  7. Wait for review. 9to5Google reports that this can take a few minutes. You get a notification when the ID is ready, plus a confirmation email from the state agency.

How to actually use it

The handover is designed so you never give your phone to anyone. Tap your phone on the reader, or let the agent scan the QR code from the pass. Nothing is shared at that point.

Your phone then shows you which specific fields are being requested. Review that screen properly rather than tapping through it. Once you approve, you confirm with your face, fingerprint, PIN or password, and only then does the data go over Bluetooth.

Under “Details” next to “Show code” there is an Activity history toggle. Turning it on gives you a log of where your ID has been presented, which is a genuinely useful record if you ever need to dispute a check.

The limits nobody puts on the marketing page

Three things are worth knowing before you treat this as a replacement for your wallet.

First, it is not a replacement. The official policy language quoted by 9to5Google states that the ID on your phone “does not replace the requirement for individuals to carry a physical card.” 9to5Google does not name the document that language comes from, so treat it as the standing rule rather than a specific Ohio statute. Either way, leave the plastic in your pocket.

Second, acceptance is narrow. The main real-world use today is TSA checkpoints at some airports. A bar, a police stop or a bank counter may well refuse it.

Third, the ID is stored as a private pass. It is not synced to the cloud and lives on one device only. That is the right privacy decision by Google, and it is also a real inconvenience the company does not advertise: lose or replace your phone and you re-do the whole photo-and-face-video enrolment from scratch. There is no restore.

How to remove your Ohio ID from Google Wallet

You can delete the ID from the phone at any time, or remotely if the device is gone. Go to myaccount.google.com, tap Personal Info, scroll to Digital ID and tap Manage Digital ID. Tap Delete next to the ID you want gone, then confirm. That removes it from both the device and your Google Account.

Ohio joins a list that already includes Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Puerto Rico. Google’s own eligible-states page did not load a current list at the time of writing, so treat that roster as the one 9to5Google observed in the app rather than an official tally.
