Kioxia has started shipping samples of its UFS 5.0 embedded flash memory, the storage standard that will sit inside the next generation of premium Android phones, and says mass production is planned before the end of 2026. The company announced the shipment on 29 July, and it is a meaningful step past the evaluation samples it sent out back in February.

What Kioxia’s UFS 5.0 storage actually delivers
The headline numbers come straight from Kioxia’s own announcement. UFS 5.0 follows the latest JEDEC standard, using MIPI M-PHY version 6.0 at the physical layer and UniPro version 3.0 for the protocol. In HS-Gear6 mode that supports a theoretical interface speed of up to 46.6Gb/s per lane, and with two lanes Kioxia quotes roughly 10.8GB/s of effective read/write throughput.
For the parts themselves, Kioxia lists:
- Capacities: 512GB and 1TB
- Sequential read: up to 10GB/s
- Sequential write: up to 9.0GB/s
- Package: 7.5 x 13mm BGA, smaller and more compact than the previous generation
- Silicon: Kioxia’s own in-house UFS 5.0 controller paired with 8th-generation BiCS FLASH 3D NAND
- Availability: samples shipping now, mass production planned during 2026
Kioxia benchmarks these against its own previous-generation UFS 4.1 parts (model numbers THGJFRT2G48BATV for 512GB and THGJFRT3G88BATW for 1TB), claiming improvements in performance, power efficiency and packaging. The company will show the parts at FMS: the Future of Memory and Storage in Santa Clara, California, from 4 to 6 August.
The on-device AI pitch, and what to make of it
Kioxia is not selling UFS 5.0 primarily on app load times. Its framing is that UFS read performance has been the thing limiting how fast large language models and other AI workloads can get at data, and that clearing that bottleneck makes apps load faster, improves responsiveness and enables more advanced on-device AI experiences. Alongside premium smartphones, the company lists AI tablets, gaming systems, AR/VR devices, robots, smart security cameras and industrial edge applications as targets.
A few caveats are worth stating plainly, and Kioxia states some of them itself. The read and write figures are described in the release as best values obtained under specific conditions in Kioxia’s own test environment, and are explicitly not a guarantee of speed in your device. Real-world gains in a phone depend on the controller, thermals, the SoC and how the OS actually schedules storage access — none of which a chip spec sheet settles.
There is also a straightforward affordability point. UFS 5.0 is launching at 512GB and 1TB only, which puts it squarely in the flagship tier, and it arrives in a year when memory and storage costs have already been the standing justification for phone price increases and quietly withdrawn perks. Faster storage is genuinely useful, but “enables on-device AI” is a manufacturer’s framing for features you have not been asked whether you want, sold into the price bracket least likely to push back. The concrete, uncontroversial benefit here — apps and large files opening faster on an expensive phone — is smaller and less exciting than the AI language around it.
When UFS 5.0 phone storage will actually ship
Samples going out to device makers is not the same as a phone you can buy. With mass production planned for sometime in 2026, the realistic expectation is that UFS 5.0 shows up in flagship Android phones launching after that ramp, not in anything on shelves now. Kioxia has not named a single customer or device, and no phone maker has announced UFS 5.0 support. Anyone telling you which 2026 flagship will have it is guessing.
