Galaxy Z Fold8 Free Storage Upgrade Is Korea-Only This Year

Samsung is still handing out a free storage upgrade with Galaxy Z Fold8 pre-orders — but only if you live in South Korea. Everywhere else, the double-storage promo that has accompanied Samsung flagship and foldable pre-orders for years has quietly disappeared from the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8 launch.

What Korean buyers get that you don’t

SamMobile checked Samsung’s Korean online store and found a free 256GB-to-512GB upgrade running on all three new foldables during the pre-order window. That is on top of the fact that the foldables are priced roughly 20% lower in South Korea than in the United States, per the same report.

In the US and other markets, the 512GB Galaxy Z Fold8 simply costs $200 more than the 256GB model from day one — the standard post-launch pricing structure, applied during a pre-order period when Samsung normally waives it. There is no promo to claim, no code, no regional variant of the offer.

This is a price increase wearing a different hat

Strip away the promo language and the maths is blunt. A buyer who wanted 512GB and expected the usual pre-order upgrade is now paying $200 they did not budget for. The disappearance of a “free” bonus is not neutral when the bonus had been reliable enough to plan around for several generations running.

The cause is not a mystery. Memory prices have been climbing all year — the same squeeze that has Qualcomm raising chip prices and Google preparing Pixel buyers for higher costs and less RAM. Storage is the easiest line item for an OEM to claw back, because cutting a bonus never reads as a price rise in a headline the way a bigger sticker number does. That is precisely why it is worth naming as one.

What is and isn’t clear on Galaxy Z Fold8 pricing

Here the reporting diverges, and it is worth being honest about it. SamMobile states that in every market outside South Korea, prices for the three foldables are up by at least $100 over the models they replace. 9to5Google’s reading of Samsung’s US store is that the base Galaxy Z Fold8 actually undercuts last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7 — while noting it drops to two rear cameras, with the third reserved for the $2,099 Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which does cost more than last year’s flagship foldable. Both can be true depending on which model and market you compare; what is not in dispute is that the storage bonus is gone outside Korea.

One partial consolation in the US: trade-in values have gone up rather than down, with Samsung quoting up to $1,200 for devices including the Galaxy S26 Ultra. If you have a recent phone to hand over, that offsets more than the lost storage upgrade would have. If you don’t, you are straightforwardly paying more for the same configuration than a Korean buyer is.

All three foldables are on pre-order now and go on sale on 7 August. If you are weighing one up, our earlier look at the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 battery cycle ratings covers another spec Samsung has quietly moved backwards on this generation.
