Android Auto Speedometer Arrives in Google Maps — But Only in Beta

Google Maps is finally adding a live Android Auto speedometer — a readout that shows your current speed right next to the posted speed-limit sign while you navigate. It is a feature Android phone users have had for years, and one that reached Apple CarPlay back in 2024, which made Android Auto the odd platform out. That gap is now closing, but with a big caveat: this is a very limited, beta-only rollout right now, so most drivers won’t see it today.

What the Android Auto speedometer actually does

During Google Maps navigation, a live speedometer now appears next to the existing speed-limit indicator on your car’s display. The clever part is the color coding: when you go over the posted limit, the speed readout changes to a more alarming color (think yellow or red) so you can catch it at a glance. The idea is that you notice you’re speeding from the head unit in your line of sight, rather than glancing down at the instrument cluster.

If you use Google Maps on your phone, none of this is new — the app has shown a speedometer there for a long time, and CarPlay drivers have had it since 2024. Android Auto was simply the last place it hadn’t arrived. So this is less a headline feature and more Google closing an obvious gap that shouldn’t have been open this long.

The catch: it’s a narrow, server-side beta rollout

Here’s the part worth being clear about before you go looking for it. This is not a broad release. It is a server-side rollout reaching a small number of Google Maps beta testers — sightings so far point to app version 26.29.02.946673643, with at least one confirmed appearance from a driver in Canada.

Because the switch is being flipped on Google’s end for select accounts, updating the Google Maps app does not guarantee you’ll get it. You could be on the exact same version as someone who has the speedometer and still not see it, because Google controls the toggle account by account. Don’t expect to enable it by sideloading a beta or hunting through settings.

There’s also no official Google announcement or blog post behind this. It surfaced through community reports — the original screenshot traces back to a Reddit user (handle SimulatorStudio), and it was first reported by 9to5Google. That’s a fine reason to treat the current rollout as early and unpredictable rather than something Google is broadly pushing.

A safety note worth keeping in mind

Google has historically treated this kind of in-app speedometer as a reference display, not a replacement for your vehicle’s actual instrument-cluster speedometer. GPS-based speed readouts can lag or drift, so the number on the head unit is a convenience, not the legal source of truth. If you’re near a limit that matters, trust the car’s own gauge.

The rest of it, in brief

  • The speedometer sits alongside the speed-limit sign that Google Maps already shows during navigation, so it doesn’t clutter the map with anything genuinely new.
  • It arrives as Google has been shipping other Android Auto navigation upgrades, including the newer “Immersive Navigation” interface with 3D buildings and better lane guidance for highway interchanges.
  • The feature’s behavior is confirmed across multiple independent sightings; only its availability is narrow.

When will it reach your phone?

There’s no official timeline for a wider push. Given that the speedometer already exists on Android phones and CarPlay, a broader Android Auto rollout seems likely eventually — but as of today it remains a beta-only preview reaching a handful of accounts. We’ll update this post if Google widens availability or says anything official.
