Pixel Phones May Drop Your Subject From Zoomed Video, Owners Report

Pixel phones recording video at high zoom can save footage framed differently from what the viewfinder showed. In the reported cases, the subject drifts out of position or drops out of the saved clip. A new Pixel 11 report brought the issue back into view this week. Android Authority then reproduced a milder version on its own Pixel 9 Pro XL.

What the Pixel 11 zoom video shows

The case comes from a Pixel 11 owner’s report highlighted by Android Authority. The owner tracks a pedestrian at 18x zoom in a screen recording. The person stays visible in the preview. In parts of the saved video, though, the person is missing. The clip was recorded at 4K and 60fps with default stabilization.

Android Authority’s own test

Android Authority ran its own check on a Pixel 9 Pro XL. It saw a similar mismatch, but a less dramatic one. Moving the camera faster eased the problem without eliminating it. For comparison, its Galaxy S26 FE at 10x showed no comparable gap between preview and recording.

The cause is still unclear. Stabilization and alignment when the phone switches lenses are suspected, but neither is confirmed. The issue also isn’t shown to affect every unit.

Reports go back to the Pixel 6 Pro

Owners have described similar behavior on Google’s Pixel help forum for years. One Pixel 6 Pro owner said that at 4x zoom and above, with default Standard stabilization, the subject moved right and out of center. A Pixel 8 Pro owner wrote in March 2025 that at 5x, the screen showed different framing from the recording. That owner tied it to stabilization being on. Android Authority also cites reports from Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL owners.

These are owner reports, not statements from Google staff. As of October 23, Google had not commented publicly, and Android Authority says it has asked for comment. Similar complaints now span several generations, from the Pixel 6 Pro to the Pixel 11. No public fix had been announced as of October 23. That gap matters most for older models like the Pixel 6 Pro, whose five-year update window closes this month.

What you can try

Until Google says more, don’t fully trust the viewfinder for zoomed tracking shots. Android Authority suggests two workarounds, and it warns that neither is certain to fix the problem.

  1. In your Pixel Camera video settings, switch stabilization from Standard to Active.
  2. If that doesn’t help, try turning stabilization off.
  3. Record a short test clip at the zoom level you plan to use, then check the saved file before the moment that matters.

Results vary between owners. One Pixel 9 Pro XL user said disabling stabilization made no difference. The Pixel 8 Pro owner on Google’s forum said turning it off fixed the problem.
