WhatsApp is overhauling how it works inside your car. The Meta-owned app announced on July 22, 2026 that it has rebuilt its Android Auto and CarPlay experience from a compose-only tool into something you can actually use hands-free while driving — hearing and replying to messages, making calls, checking call history, and reaching favorite contacts, all from the car’s own screen.
What’s new for Android Auto
Until now, WhatsApp on Android Auto let you compose new messages and place calls, but not much else. WhatsApp says the refreshed version adds the ability to hear incoming messages read aloud and reply to them by voice, view your call history, and jump straight to your favorite contacts — all without touching the phone. WhatsApp’s own blog post describes it simply: “We’ve completely refreshed the experience on both.”
This closes a real gap for anyone who relies on WhatsApp as their main messaging app: previously, staying responsive on a drive meant either composing blind or waiting until you’d stopped. The update brings WhatsApp’s in-car functionality closer to what built-in messaging and calling apps already offer on Android Auto — including live speed readouts Google Maps recently started testing in beta for the same platform.
Also announced: iPad sign-up, music sharing, and PDF viewing
The Android Auto and CarPlay refresh was part of a broader feature roundup WhatsApp posted on its official blog. Three other changes shipped alongside it:
- iPad sign-up: users can now register a WhatsApp account directly from the iPad app rather than linking it as a companion device to a phone. A phone number and one-time passcode are still required to set it up, but the account then works standalone.
- Music sharing to Status: users can share a song straight from Apple Music or Spotify to their WhatsApp Status.
- In-app PDF viewing: on WhatsApp for web and desktop, PDFs shared in a chat can now be opened directly in the app — powered by Adobe Acrobat — without downloading them first, with lightweight editing tools like highlighting and annotating.
When will it reach your phone?
WhatsApp says in its own blog post that “these features are already rolling out now,” without giving a specific completion date or region-by-region schedule. As with most WhatsApp rollouts, expect the Android Auto and CarPlay changes, along with the other three features, to arrive in stages over the coming days and weeks rather than all at once — so don’t be surprised if a friend gets hands-free replies in their car before you do.
