T-Mobile’s New Student Plans Start at $30, but Cap You at Two Lines

T-Mobile student plans are here for the new school year, and the headline number is a real one: a single Essentials Saver line drops to $30 a month. Before you switch, though, look at what the discount is fenced in by — a hard two-line cap, ongoing student verification, and phone trade-in promotions that will likely be worth less than the ones ordinary customers get.

T-Mobile student plans: what each tier costs

The discount, branded Student Perks Savings, applies to three existing postpaid plans rather than introducing a new one. The Mobile Report, which broke the story on 30 July, lists the pricing as follows:

  • Essentials Saver — $30/month for one line, $60 for two. Unlimited talk and text with 50GB of premium data.
  • Experience More — $65/month for one line, $110 for two.
  • Experience Beyond — $80/month for one line, $130 for two. This is T-Mobile’s top consumer tier.

The largest saving in dollar terms sits at the top: two Experience Beyond lines come in at $130 against $170 on the standard version, a $40 monthly difference. As with T-Mobile’s other segmented rate plans — 55+, First Responder, Military — these are the same plans with the same perks at a reduced rate, and standard postpaid conditions such as AutoPay enrolment still apply.

We were not able to check these figures against T-Mobile’s own plans page from where we are, so treat them as reported by The Mobile Report rather than as confirmed by the carrier. The plans are live now on T-Mobile’s site under the “Discounts for 55+, First Responder…” banner at the bottom of the plans page.

The catches worth reading before you sign

The two-line ceiling is the big one. These plans cannot be stretched to cover a household or a group of four roommates splitting a bill — the moment you need a third line, you are back on standard rates, and a four-line standard plan will often beat two student lines on per-line cost. The discount is built for a student and at most one other person, not for sharing.

Student status also has to be verified, which means the discount is only yours for as long as you keep proving you are enrolled. And the phone deals are the part most likely to disappoint. The Mobile Report notes that T-Mobile’s existing segmented plans already carry cut-down trade-in values — one current iPhone promotion is worth up to $1,100 off on standard Experience Beyond but only $900 off on the 55+, First Responder and Military variants — and expects the student plans to land in that same lower bracket. If the reason you are switching carriers is a free flagship, run that maths separately rather than assuming the plan discount stacks on top of the best handset offer.

Context matters here too. T-Mobile has spent recent months retiring older plans and migrating those customers onto newer ones that Android Authority notes are potentially more expensive. A well-timed student discount is a genuine saving for the people eligible for it, but it is also a low-risk way to look like the cheap carrier again while the base of the price list keeps drifting upward — and it arrives while the wider US market reshuffles around T-Mobile, including AT&T’s EchoStar spectrum deal.

Should you take it?

If you are a single student on your own line and you do not need more than 50GB of premium data a month, $30 with unlimited talk and text is a strong price on a major US network, and Essentials Saver is the tier to take. If you were hoping to put a family on it, or you are shopping primarily for a phone deal, the restrictions eat most of the advantage — compare against a standard multi-line plan and against prepaid options before you commit.
