Snap Reveals Specs Intelligence AI for Its $2,195 AR Glasses

Snap has finally shown what its $2,195 Specs AR glasses can actually do. It unveiled the hardware back in June. This week, the company detailed Specs Intelligence, its new AI platform, and opened a companion iOS app that anyone can try today.

What’s new this week

Snap introduced Specs and opened pre-orders in June, pricing the glasses at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit at SPECS.com. What Snap held back until now is the software. Specs Intelligence is an “anticipatory” AI platform. Snap says it builds an understanding of a user’s goals, priorities, relationships, and routines from the apps and tools they connect. Starting September 16, anyone can download the iOS app and try the assistant. A waitlist is open for early access to a fuller Mac version.

What Specs can do

The glasses run a browser that can stream YouTube and HBO Max onto a virtual 115-inch screen placed roughly 10 feet away. An in-display translator adds subtitles in 60 languages. Snap has lined up an HBO Max tie-in around its Harry Potter series premiering at Christmas, plus NBA and WNBA content, Spotify playback, and a Tripadvisor integration for nearby food and landmarks. A “Connected Lens” feature lets two Specs wearers share the same augmented overlay in one physical space.

Snap says privacy was a design constraint from the start. Its own newsroom post states: “Over the past year and a half, we’ve shipped 10 Snap OS updates with more than 40 new features and APIs.” That framing is worth reading carefully for what it doesn’t address. An always-on camera-and-microphone device that streams video, tracks location for navigation, and profiles a wearer’s goals and relationships for its AI is a different privacy proposition than a phone. Snap has said the glasses do not constantly capture and save audio, and that an LED lights up while recording. Neither claim has been independently verified.

Pricing, availability, and the case that costs extra

Specs remain priced at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit. Snap expects to ship in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France this fall. A separate Connected Case with a built-in cellular hotspot is sold on its own. In the US, Snap has partnered with Verizon for a bundle priced at $2,395. Data plans start at $10 a month for Verizon customers and $20 a month for everyone else. Buyers who want a hands-on look first can visit SPECS First Look at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles, starting October 1.

The bigger picture

Smart glasses haven’t settled on a design the way phones and watches have. Snap is betting that a genuinely capable, standalone AR device beats a stripped-down audio wearable. At $2,195 before the case, hotspot data, and any prescription inserts, Specs costs well above what most buyers spend on a phone. That makes this week’s AI platform, not June’s hardware reveal, the part that will actually decide whether early adopters see enough daily value to justify the price.
