The GSMA published the specifications on 28 July for RCS Universal Profile 4.1, and unlike the last update it is not selling you a feature. Where Universal Profile 4.0 brought native video calls and rich text formatting, 4.1 is almost entirely plumbing: tighter end-to-end encryption interoperability, a new transport layer, and one user-facing addition — a control over who gets to see your name and profile picture in a chat.

The profile-sharing control is the part you will actually see
RCS Universal Profile 4.1 lets you share your name and image from an account you already have — the GSMA names Google, Apple and operator accounts — so that people can tell who is who in a conversation, group chats especially. Crucially, the spec also says you get to decide who receives that information rather than it simply going out to everyone you message.
That control is worth having, because the feature it governs is a new identity leak by default. Your carrier or Google account name and photo landing in a group thread with people you have never met is exactly the kind of thing that should be opt-in and per-conversation, and the spec at least allows for that. Whether it works that way on your phone is a different question — the GSMA writes standards, it does not ship apps. Google Messages, Apple’s Messages and each carrier’s RCS backend decide the actual defaults, and none of them has said what those defaults will be or when 4.1 arrives on handsets.
Encryption interoperability gets the real work
The more consequential change is buried. The GSMA says 4.1 refines the end-to-end encryption specifications using lessons from interoperability testing, so that two people on different messaging clients or services still get working encryption between them. That matters directly because E2EE for RCS is currently rolling out across an ecosystem where the sender and receiver frequently are not on the same app — the Android-to-iPhone case being the obvious one.
The other change is a switch to an optimised, connectionless transport protocol based on gRPC for moving messages and signalling between networks. The GSMA describes it as reducing overhead and letting messages travel with less unnecessary resource use, for greater stability, reliability and scalability — applied to person-to-person messaging, business messaging, Messaging Initiated Video Calls and spam and scam reporting. Tom Van Pelt, the GSMA’s technical director, is candid in the announcement about how visible any of this will be:
For consumers, these changes will largely go unnoticed, and that is precisely the goal.
What this means for your phone
Nothing, yet. A published Universal Profile is a target for carriers and app makers, not an update sitting in the Play Store. Past profiles have taken many months to reach devices, and adoption is uneven between operators and between countries — the same reason RCS features you read about often show up in one market long before another. There is also a fair reading of “business messaging” and “spam and scam reporting” getting first-class treatment here: RCS’s commercial value to carriers is brands messaging you, and the standard keeps investing in that side of the pipe.
If you want the features RCS already has on your phone today, the practical route is still keeping Google Messages current — that is where changes like chat themes land first on Android.
