Leaked marketing material for the base Google Pixel 11 carries a camera sample explicitly labelled “30x zoom” — a number the non-Pro Pixel has never advertised before. The catch, and the reason this is worth reading closely rather than getting excited about, is that no leak so far points to any new telephoto hardware on the standard Pixel 11. If the 30x figure is real, it is a software ceiling being raised, not a lens being improved.
What the Pixel 11 30x zoom claim actually means
The Pixel 10 — the non-Pro model — shipped with a 10.8MP 5x optical telephoto and a Super Res Zoom ceiling of 20x. Super Res Zoom is Google’s computational upscaler, introduced back on the Pixel 3: it fuses multiple frames and sharpens the result to fake detail the sensor never resolved. Moving the published ceiling from 20x to 30x, on a phone whose telephoto lens is expected to be the same or near-identical, means the extra reach is arriving in software.
That is not automatically bad. Google’s zoom processing is genuinely among the best in the business, and a higher ceiling that Google is confident enough to put in a marketing shot is more useful than a ceiling it hides. But a “30x zoom” badge on a spec sheet invites buyers to read it as an optical capability, and it is not one. At 30x on a 5x lens, you are looking at a 6x crop reconstructed by an algorithm.
One detail is genuinely unsettled: whether the 30x mode is conventional Super Res Zoom or leans on Google’s generative Pro Res Zoom, which the Pro models use to reach 100x by having a model invent plausible detail. Those are meaningfully different things — one sharpens what the sensor saw, the other draws what it thinks should be there — and nobody outside Google knows which is being used here. Anyone who cares about their photos being a record of what was actually in front of them should hold that question until 12 August.
What else is in the leak, and what is not
- Source — the images come from leaker Evan Blass, published 31 July through his Substack newsletter. AndroidPure has not independently viewed the assets and is describing what the leak is reported to contain.
- Gemini Intelligence — the material also shows agentic Gemini features on-screen, consistent with the “with Gemini Intelligence” tagline that appeared in the leaked Pixel 11 Pro Fold marketing renders AndroidPure covered on 30 July.
- Colours — four finishes are shown, but outlets reporting the same leak have published two conflicting sets of colour names, so AndroidPure is not repeating either until one is confirmed.
- Not shown — no chipset detail, no confirmed sensor specs, no pricing and no camera comparison against the Pixel 10 appear in what has been described.
When it becomes official
Google’s Made by Google event is set for 12 August in New York, where the Pixel 11 line is expected in full. Marketing renders this close to an event are usually accurate to the finished product, but a zoom number printed on a promotional image is a claim by Google’s marketing team, not a measurement — the reviews that matter are the ones that shoot the same scene at 30x on a Pixel 11 and a Pixel 10 and put the crops side by side.
