A small number of iPhone Duo owners say the phone’s inner folding screen failed along the hinge within hours of launch. Most photos, posted to Reddit and the MacRumors forums, show a line of bright pixels across one side of the display. As of publication, Apple has not commented publicly on the reports.

Nobody knows yet how widespread this is or what’s causing it. The Apple Post describes the number of known cases as very small. Still, if you’ve just bought a Duo, your first two weeks with it matter.
What iPhone Duo owners are reporting
One owner in Australia, cited by MacRumors, said the screen cracked after about six hours of use. They said they had opened the phone fewer than 20 times and saw no damage beforehand. An Apple Store replaced the device right away. The Apple Post adds that, according to the owner, Apple first offered an express replacement.
Droid-Life counted at least three Reddit threads on launch day. One phone failed after about six hours of use, and another apparently never made it through setup. The third was a store demo unit. Droid-Life says the failures in the photos it saw sit roughly two-thirds of the way down the crease. The Verge describes a bright line, or lines, across the right side of the display at a similar spot.
MacRumors also points to photos of broken demo units in China, where the Duo went on sale hours before the US. It cautions that the backstory for most of those images is unknown and that user damage could be a factor. Some reviewers ran folding tests without screen problems, but MacRumors calls that a small sample. Some commenters online have also questioned whether every photo is genuine.
What to do if your iPhone Duo screen fails
Check the inner screen carefully during your first days with the phone. Apple’s US online store gives you 14 calendar days from delivery to return an item. If a line or crack appears, photograph it right away. Then take the phone to an Apple Store or contact Apple Support.
MacRumors expects hinge failures from normal use to be covered by Apple’s one-year warranty. That’s the outlet’s reading, not an Apple statement. Even so, push back if you’re quoted a paid repair for a hinge that failed in normal use under warranty.
What Apple’s own hinge repair guide says
Apple published a set of iPhone Duo support documents on launch day. One of them covers hinge troubleshooting. It’s routine launch documentation, not a response to these reports, and it doesn’t mention cracks or display lines.

The guide lists symptoms such as a phone that won’t fully open or close, unexpected noise, and a loose or bent hinge. It also covers enclosure damage that affects how the hinge works. Apple’s own hinge troubleshooting guide notes, “There aren’t diagnostics or software remedies for hinge issues.” In other words, a restart or software update won’t fix a hinge fault. If the guide’s inspection steps don’t resolve the problem, its final step is to replace the inner display assembly.
A familiar early test for foldables
Apple’s hardware chief has defended the Duo’s crease and durability. Several early reports now place failures at a similar spot, though the numbers are tiny and unverified. Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold had a rough start of its own in 2019, a comparison Droid-Life also draws. Until the cause is clearer, the safest move is to use the return window while you still have it.
