The Nothing Phone 1 processor has been revealed by the company’s founder, ahead of the device’s launch. The upcoming 5G mobile will use a Snapdragon 778G+ chipset.
The news comes directly from the company’s founder, who spoke to Inputmag. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ is a mid-range chip, that has been custom-tuned specifically for the Nothing Phone.
Nothing Phone 1 processor
According to Pei, the decision to go with the Snapdragon 778G+ (over Snapdragon 888, 8 Gen 1, etc) was because of power efficiency. The 6nm process chipset will offer 30% better performance in terms of heating, powersaving, i.e. better battery life. Pei confirmed that the processor has better thermals and power saving than the current lineup including the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 series.
Even though it is similar to the regular Snapdragon 778G, the Nothing Phone 1 processor has two extra features: wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. These are usually found in Qualcomm’s flagship processors in the 800 series, but these were added to the 778G+ for the Nothing Phone.
There is of course another factor that played a role in choosing the chipset, the price. Snapdragon’s flagship chipsets are expensive compared to the mid-range alternatives. So, by using a Snapdragon 778G+, the Nothing Phone 1 could be more affordable. Pei says that mid-range devices such as the OnePlus Nord, which was his pet project, are devices capable of doing everything that flagship phones can, and that tech specs are irrelevant.
The flashy phone has over 900 LEDs on the back for its Glyph Interface. The Nothing Phone 1 will not be available in North America, it will be sold in India, the UK and Europe. Rumour has it that the phone will be priced around Rs. 31,000 in India. The pre-order pass waitlist for the device ends today.
