Nokia 9 PureView will not get the Android 11 Update; company offers users a 50% discount for Nokia XR20

Nokia has been known for providing timely software updates for its devices. Well, until now, that is. The Nokia 9 PureView will not get the Android 11 Update. The company has confirmed this on its official website.

Why the Nokia 9 PureView will not get the Android 11 Update

According to a statement released by Nokia licensee, HMD Global, there is some sort of technical difficulty in upgrading the Nokia 9 PureView to the latest version of Android. The company claims that it could cause some incompatibilities between the camera and the software, which would in turn lead to a below-par experience compared to the standards set by Nokia.

To recall, the device was announced in 2019. This is not a mid-range phone, it is a flagship device with a whopping Rs. 49,999 price tag. The processor on the PureView is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. We have seen lower end phones perform admirably with Android 11. So, the PureView is perfectly capable of running Android 11, and even Android 12 for that matter. So, the company’s claim seems quite a bit odd.

In order to compensate for this, the brand is offering users with a Nokia 9 PureView, a 50% discount off of the Nokia XR20. The rugged smartphone is not a flagship device, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G processor. And it costs Rs. 46,999, almost the same as the Nokia 9 PureView. So, even at half off, that would bring the price to around Rs. 24,000. That is not exactly cheap, is it?

Unlike the 2019 device, the XR20 does not have an OLED 2K display, and instead has a 1080p LCD screen.  On the bright side, the Nokia XR20 has a bigger battery than the PureView, supports 5G mobile networks, and is IP68 water-resistant, and drop resistant. Nokia has promised 3 years of software upgrades for the XR20, but given this fiasco, I think it is fair for users to be skeptical.

PureView users who are interested in upgrading to the XR20, may visit the upgrade page on Nokia’s website, and enter their device’s IMEI, to check if they are eligible for the offer.
