Chrome Enhanced Protection Adds Softer Warnings for Suspicious Sites

Chrome’s Enhanced Protection mode now shows a second, softer warning for sites it rates as suspicious. The existing red full-page block for dangerous sites stays in place. The same update also shifts more scam checking to Google’s servers, which is the part privacy-minded users should weigh.

Google announced the changes on October 20 in a blog post by Jasika Bawa, Group Product Manager for Chrome. Here is what’s new and what it sends off your device.

Chrome Enhanced Protection’s two warning tiers

Google now splits risky sites into two groups. A suspicious site gets a lower-confidence verdict, meaning there’s a possible risk of harm. A dangerous site gets a high-confidence verdict and keeps the familiar red interstitial.

For suspicious sites, 9to5Google reports a shield icon in the address bar. The warning offers two choices, Mark as safe and Back to safety. Google’s screenshots show the warning on desktop and on a phone. Its post doesn’t say which platforms get the new tier, or when.

Gemini scam detection moves to Google’s servers

Chrome’s Gemini-based scam detection used to run on your device. It now uses what Google calls a more powerful server-side Gemini model. That lets it cover every Enhanced Protection user, not just those on supported hardware. Google says it also catches more scam types, including fake antivirus and fake browser update pages.

Google says page text is analyzed only when a site shows high-confidence scam indicators. It also says anything sent off the device is processed ephemerally, and is never logged, kept or used for training. That is Google’s own claim, and androidpure can’t independently check it.

ClickFix clipboard checks

ClickFix scams trick people into pasting and running commands on their own computers. Now, if you copy something that looks like a ClickFix script, Chrome strips personal information from it first. It then sends the clipboard contents to Safe Browsing for analysis, and warns you if the verdict is dangerous. Bawa describes the goal this way:

“This system is designed to be high precision, in order to protect users in real time while minimizing disruption to legitimate developer activity.”

Because ClickFix relies on terminal commands, this check matters mostly on desktop.

The privacy tradeoff

Enhanced Protection already sends more browsing data to Google than Standard Protection does. This update adds page text from flagged sites and some copied commands to that list. The protection is real, but you’re trusting Google’s word on how that data is handled.

Google also says Enhanced Protection users are ten times safer. Its own footnote explains that figure compares how many warnings each group sees. It counts warnings shown, not harm prevented, so treat it as a rough signal rather than proof.

How to turn on Enhanced Protection

In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Security and select Enhanced Protection. Google applies a similar opt-in scam mode elsewhere, as we covered with Google Messages Enhanced Protection.
