Xiaomi confirms Redmi Note 3 will not be updated anymore, Mi 5 suffers same fate

Xiaomi has officially confirmed that the Redmi Note 3 will not be updated anymore. The Mi 5 suffers the same fate.

Redmi Note 3 will not be updated anymore

What changed Xiaomi? In a blunt statement on the forums, Xiaomi has announced,

We have confirmed with MIUI Global ROM developer team that there will be no Global Beta update for Mi 5 & Redmi Note 3 Pro, except for the last stable ROM that comes in the near future. And Beta Team for Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3 Pro will be disbanded after its release.

Thank you for your continuous support.

That last line is pure irony.

It is a sad day indeed, when the phone which revolutionized the mid-range market, especially in India, has reached its end of support in 2 years. The Redmi Note 3 was/is one of the best devices from the company.

Xiaomi has fanatical support from its forum users, who rejoice when every MIUI version update was released, as if it was an Android OS version upgrade. The company was known for supporting devices with updates for as many as 5 years (for some phones), but not every phone had the latest features.

We think there may be a reason why the Mi 5 and the Redmi Note 3 will not be updated anymore, and you’re not going to like it. Whenever a company stops updating its older phones, there are 2 possible reasons. One, the device cannot handle modern OS upgrades, which in this case isn’t true. Two, most OEMs do not support their devices for more than 48 months.

This might be why the Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3 will not be updated anymore

We think there may be another reason for this move, and you’re not going to like it. Xiaomi has several newer devices selling across various markets and of course, India. If the company decides to stop updating the Redmi Note 3, users may consider upgrading to a newer device.

Basically, stop the updates, and force users to pay for a new phone. That’s a sneaky way to make profits, right? But treating the Mi 5 flagship users in the same way, is shameful really.

MIUI forum users have taken to the official announcement to slam the company’s decision, and we can’t help but agree with them, for once.
