Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition is available for Rs. 270 ($4) on Google Play (Open Beta)

Don’t Starve Pocket Edition is now available on Google Play. Canadian game studio, Klei Entertainment, has brought its hit  survival-horror game from PCs, to Android devices.

As much as I adore the game on Steam, there is something unusual about the mobile release, which disappoints me.

The developer calls it an Open Beta, but the game comes with a price tag. This is very unusual in the world of Android, where normally game developers do not ask people to buy their test versions.

Developers on Steam do charge for games for early access versions. So, it is likely that Klei is trying something similar on Google Play. As a PC gamer I am okay with it, but mobile gamers will be annoyed if they pay for a game which may or may not work on their devices. A reddit thread is already raising the pitchforks against the paid open beta. (in case you didn’t get that joke, Don’t Starve lets you craft Pitchforks for digging up turf.)

Google Play marks unreleased versions with a tag which says “This is an unreleased app. It may be unstable.” That’s a standard warning though, and we have seen many reports that Don’t Starve works fine on most devices, but since we haven’t tested it personally and also because we are unsure how refunds would work with the “Open Beta”, you may want to try it at your own risk.

Just one more tip, the game requires a device running on Android 5.0 or above to work, but word is that the developer is trying to add support for older versions of Android. That might explain why it’s in beta.

That being said, Don’t Starve is a fantastic game, with tons of replayability. You play as Wilson, a scientist who has been trapped in a mysterious world full of danger. In your quest of survival, you can craft a bunch of things, which will help you keep Wilson alive. The game is not easy, but its also fun.

It certainly isn’t as grindy as Crashlands, in case you are wondering about the “crafting” similarities. They are very different games

And you can get Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition for Rs. 270 (about $4), which is a 20% off the normal price before its launch. That would put the launch price at about Rs. 330 or $5.

And here is a link to the Steam version of Don’t Starve, which I highly recommend.  Or if you want to go DRM free, here is a link for the GOG version. It goes on sale quite often, should you wish to pick a copy for dirt cheap.
