Cyanogen and OnePlus part ways, will continue to support its ROM on the OnePlus One

Cyanogen has apparently ended its partnership with OnePlus.

CyanogenMod

The news comes from its outspoken CEO, Kirt McMaster.

Controversies Galore:

He made yet another controversial statement by claiming that CyanogenMod was the reason why OnePlus became popular.

“Without Cyanogen, OnePlus would have sold like one device in international markets,” McMaster said, “Essentially they built their brand on the back of Cyanogen.”

Yeah, right!. It appears that someone is forgetting the OnePlus One’s hardware and the price tag.

Cyanogen’s Chief Technology Officer, Steve Kondik, said that their goals didn’t align with those of OnePlus.

“That’s probably the last you will see from that partnership unfortunately,” he said. “Two new companies are trying to do crazy stuff, a lot of people collide.”

This is probably the important point here, signifying the end of the partnership between the two.

OnePlus One:

Carl Pei, OnePlus’ founder,  said that the partnership with Cyanogen was mutually beneficial, and that his company couldn’t be where it is today without the joint effort.  This also suggests that the partnership is over. Cyanogen will however continue to support the OnePlus One.

Future of Cyanogen:

Cyanogen is reportedly planning to work with other Chinese Smartphone makers with “global ambitions”. There is no word yet on who the new smartphone partners of Cyanogen are. The company is apparently targeting the International market, and not the Chinese market which has over 100 smartphone brands.

“It’s a great way for them to build some identity outside of China using a brand that’s already reasonably well known,” McMaster said at the Global Mobile Internet Conference, in Beijing.”

According to McMaster, their partnership with OnePlus has attracted many big smartphone makers. who have not yet made an impact internationally.

“OnePlus shipped reasonable volume, but nothing compared to what some of these other partners can ship. So we are working with partners that can scale much quicker.”
