Pixel Search Ships as a Play Store App, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Included

Pixel Search, the unified on-device search Google introduced with the Pixel 11 series this week, is not baked into the system image the way you would expect. It has appeared on the Play Store as a standalone app — and Droid Life’s Kellen reports being able to install it not just on Pixel 11 phones but on Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra as well, which makes it considerably less of a Pixel exclusive than the branding suggests.

The package name is com.google.android.apps.pixel.launcherconnector, and it carries no description from Google at all. We were not able to open the Play listing ourselves when we checked — it returned a not-found response.

Why shipping Pixel Search as an app matters

Splitting a system feature out into a Play Store package is a familiar Google move, and it has a real upside for owners: search improvements can then arrive whenever Google pushes an app update, instead of waiting on a quarterly Pixel Drop or a full Android release. If you have ever watched a Pixel feature sit in beta for three months, that is the mechanism that shortens the wait.

The other consequence is the one Google has not talked about. A Play-distributed app is installable by whatever devices Google’s targeting rules allow, and right now that list already includes Samsung foldables. Whether that is a deliberate expansion or an artefact of how the app is scoped, it undercuts the idea that Pixel Search is a reason to buy a Pixel. Google has not published a compatibility list.

What Pixel Search actually searches

Google’s own description, quoted by 9to5Google, calls it a “dedicated search companion designed to help you find personal information faster than ever”. In practice it is the Pixel Launcher’s existing app-drawer search with a much wider net.

Previously that search covered Clock, Contacts, Pixel Tips, Play Store, Settings and Wallet. On the Pixel 11 the list expands to include Calendar, Drive, Files by Google, Gmail, Messages, Photos and Pixel Screenshots, so a single query can surface calendar events, Drive documents, emails, a row of photos and Google Messages chats together. If you have several accounts, you can pin a specific address for Drive and Gmail. Work profile results are supported too.

That is a lot of personal data behind one text field, and it is worth knowing it is there before you hand your phone to someone to look at a photo.

The catch: Google buried it

The search bar on your home screen is not the one that does any of this. Pixel Search lives in the field you get after swiping up into the app drawer; the home-screen bar still opens the Google app. 9to5Google’s Abner Li is blunt about the cost of that decision, writing that the placement “greatly reduced my usage of Pixel search this past week.”

It is a fair complaint. Google spent the effort to make device-wide search genuinely good and then put the weaker, ad-adjacent Google Search field in the position everybody’s thumb already goes to. The workaround, if you want Pixel Search closer to hand, is to set the Pixel Launcher to open the keyboard automatically when you swipe up from the home screen — one gesture instead of two taps.

None of the underlying capability is brand new; most of it existed in some form before. What changed is that it is now one bar, one index, and a package Google can update independently of Android itself.
