Walmart Will Finally Let You Tap to Pay With Google Pay From Next Week

Google Pay tap to pay is finally coming to Walmart, ending one of the last big holdouts against contactless payments in American retail. Google announced the change on 21 August, saying the feature starts at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the US “next week” — 9to5Google and TechCrunch both put the start date at 24 August, though Google’s own post does not name a day.

For anyone who has stood at a Walmart terminal with a phone that works everywhere else, this is the fix. Walmart spent years refusing NFC payments and steering shoppers toward Walmart Pay, a QR-code system that only works inside the Walmart app. That refusal is what made Walmart notable — not the technology, which has been standard at US registers for the better part of a decade.

What Google Pay at Walmart actually means for shoppers

Writing on Google’s blog, Stavan Parikh, VP/GM of Payments at Google, described the rollout and its timeline in one line:

Starting next week, shoppers can tap to pay using Google Pay for a quicker and more secure buying experience at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S., with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and to fuel stations by mid-2027.

Two words in there deserve attention. “Select” means Google is not saying which stores are switched on, and there is no store locator or list to check — you will find out at the register. And “by the end of 2026” is the real completion target, so if your local Walmart still refuses the tap in September, that is the plan working as described rather than a fault. Fuel stations, where Walmart Pay has been most entrenched, wait until mid-2027.

Nothing is being taken away. Cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay all continue to work, so the QR flow stays for anyone who prefers it.

Why tapping is the better option here

The practical difference is not just speed. Paying with Walmart Pay means opening Walmart’s app and completing the transaction inside a retailer’s own software. Paying with Google Pay means your phone hands the terminal a tokenised card number over NFC — the merchant never sees your actual card details, and you never have to launch a shopping app to buy something. For a chain that built its own payment product partly to keep customers inside its app, that is a meaningful shift in who is holding the transaction.

It is also worth being precise about scope. Google’s announcement covers Google Pay. TechCrunch reports Walmart is turning on contactless payments broadly, which would take in Apple Pay too, and the Walmart line it quotes refers generically to “contactless payment methods” — but Google’s post speaks only for Google Pay, and that is the part confirmed first-hand.

What to do before your next trip

Nothing complicated: add your preferred card to Google Wallet ahead of time, since the one moment you do not want to be setting up a payment method is at a checkout with a queue behind you. Any Android phone with NFC and Google Wallet installed already has everything it needs. If the terminal does not respond to a tap, that store simply has not been switched over yet.
