Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 Get 5 Years of Wear OS Updates

Samsung’s newest wearables come with a longer software promise: the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 get five major Wear OS upgrades and five years of security patches — one more major OS upgrade than recent Galaxy Watch models. Both launched at Unpacked on July 22 with Wear OS 7 and One UI 9 Watch; general availability is August 7, 2026.

Who gets five OS upgrades

  • Watch9 / Watch Ultra2: 5 major Wear OS upgrades + 5 years security
  • Older Galaxy Watches (Watch8, original Ultra, and earlier): still on the prior four-OS-upgrade track unless Samsung expands it later

That distinction matters. This is not a free upgrade for last year’s watch — it is locked to the 2026 models if software runway is why you buy.

How firm is the confirmation?

Samsung has not, as of this writing, led a consumer marketing page with a clear “five years of Wear OS” promise the way it markets multi-year phone support. The five-upgrade figure was reported after Unpacked as Samsung’s confirmation to SamMobile, then carried by other outlets. Treat it as a post-event confirmation via the press, not a full Samsung Newsroom product-spec page you can quote line-by-line. If Samsung publishes an official support matrix later, that is the document to trust over secondary write-ups.

Why buyers should care (and what it doesn’t fix)

Phones at the high end are racing toward seven years of OS support. Watches have lagged. Five major Wear OS steps reduces the chance a 3–4 year owner hits a hard OS cliff mid-ownership, and security length matters more as watches hold payments and health data.

It does not cancel other Ultra2 caveats. Deeper dive features still arrive later and, as we covered in the diving subscription story, some sit behind partner software and recurring fees — longer OS support does not make those free forever.

Pricing snapshot

  • Watch9: from about $379 (US) / €409
  • Watch Ultra2: about $699 / €749
  • On sale: August 7, 2026 (pre-orders open since Unpacked)

US carriers are stacking separate watch bill credits next to foldable deals — those almost always need an active watch line for the full term. Read the plan fine print before counting on “on us” wearable math.
