Fitbit Edge May Get Sleep Breathing Quality, but Not at Launch

Google says it wants to bring Sleep Breathing Quality to the Fitbit Edge. The tracker won’t have it, though, when it goes on sale on October 27. This is Google’s first statement about the feature on the Edge, and it comes with no date and no firm commitment.

Google gave the statement to Android Authority:

Sleep breathing quality is currently only on Pixel Watch 5 and we’re looking to bring it to Fitbit Edge.

Until now, Edge owners had nothing to go on. As we reported, Google’s earlier statement covered only the Fitbit Air.

Fitbit Edge Sleep Breathing Quality: weaker wording than the Air got

The two statements aren’t equal. For the Fitbit Air, Google said the feature would arrive soon. For the Edge, it only says it is looking to add it. That’s an intention, not a timeline, and it leaves room for the feature never to ship.

That matters if you’re buying the $179.99 Fitbit Edge next week. Don’t count on Sleep Breathing Quality at launch, or on any specific date after it.

Android Authority points out that the Edge already has blood-oxygen sensing hardware. Google’s statement doesn’t say what is holding the feature back.

Will it need Premium?

The Edge already supports the other two Health Guardian insights: blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends. On the Edge, both require a Google Health Premium subscription. Pixel Watch owners get those insights without paying.

As of October 22, Google hasn’t said whether Sleep Breathing Quality would also sit behind Premium on the Edge. Until it does, buyers can’t tell whether the feature would be free or another subscription perk.

How Sleep Breathing Quality works

According to Google’s own feature page, the device tracks your main sleep using its optical and motion sensors. On-device AI then evaluates how your blood oxygen level shifts minute by minute through the night. You get two readings from it:

  • Daily score: the percentage of the night your breathing was optimal
  • Monthly assessment: a summary delivered on the 1st of each month

Google also notes that the feature is not intended to screen for or diagnose sleep apnea.
