Google Drops Play Services Support for Android 6 Marshmallow Phones

Google has quietly ended Google Play services support for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, raising the minimum requirement to Android 7.0 Nougat. There was no announcement, no blog post and no in-app warning — the change surfaced only because Android Authority noticed the wording on Google’s own support page had shifted.

What actually changed with Play services on Android 6

Google’s Play services help page now reads that Play services “are only supported on devices with Android 7.0 (API level 24) and up.” Archived copies of that same page from earlier this year still listed Android 6.0 as the floor, which puts the change within roughly the last few weeks. Google published nothing to mark it.

That single line does more than it looks. Play services is not the Play Store — it is the layer that connects apps to Google account sign-in, Maps, location, push notifications, payments and a long list of other APIs, and it is also how Google pushes a large share of Android security fixes to devices whose manufacturers stopped issuing updates years ago. When Play services stops being updated on a device, the phone does not break in one dramatic moment. It decays: apps that require a newer Play services version start refusing to install or update, then start failing at sign-in or at features that depend on Google APIs, and the security patches Google was still quietly delivering stop arriving.

Basic phone functions survive. Calls, texts, the camera, already-installed apps that do not depend on newer Google APIs — those keep working. It is everything downstream of Google’s services that erodes.

How to check whether your phone is affected

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Scroll to About phone (on some skins, System > About phone).
  3. Look for Android version. If it reads 6.0 or 6.0.1, this affects you. Android 7.0 or higher and you are fine for now.

If you are on 6.0 and there is no OS update available under Settings > System > System update, the device has reached the end of the line for Google’s software. There is no fix short of replacing it — or, for the technically comfortable, installing a maintained custom ROM, which is realistic on a handful of once-popular models and not on most.

Nearly 11 years, and the reason it lasted that long

Android 6.0 shipped in October 2015, which makes this close to an eleven-year support run through Play services — longer than Google has given any other Android release. Credit where it is due: that far exceeds what the phones’ actual manufacturers offered, most of whom walked away after two years.

The criticism is the delivery, not the decision. Cutting off a decade-old OS is entirely reasonable; doing it via a silently edited support page is not. The people still running Marshmallow in 2026 are overwhelmingly not enthusiasts tracking Google’s help center — they are budget-device owners in India, Indonesia, Brazil, Nigeria and similar markets where a working phone stays in service until it physically dies. Those users will find out when an app stops working, with no idea why. A notification, or even a support-page changelog, would have cost Google nothing.

It is also a reminder of what an update promise is worth in practice. Google’s own Pixel 6 end-of-life this year showed the same pattern at the premium end: support ends on the vendor’s schedule, announced as quietly as the vendor can manage. Budget for a replacement before the software decides for you.
