Alexa+ Is Now Free on Fire TV in the US, No Prime Needed

Amazon has removed the subscription barrier around Alexa+ on Fire TV. As of 19 August 2026, the company’s next-generation assistant is included at no additional cost on compatible Fire TV hardware in the United States, regardless of whether you pay for Prime. Until now, anyone without a Prime membership had to pay $19.99 per month for Alexa+, a price TechCrunch notes applied to customers outside the Prime bundle.

In Amazon’s own words, “Alexa+ on Fire TV is rolling out now to all customers in the U.S. with compatible Fire TV devices.” The rollout is automatic. “Eligible Fire TV customers—regardless of their Prime membership status—are automatically upgraded to the Alexa+ experience,” the newsroom post says, adding: “There’s no action required, no app to download, and no subscription to activate.”

Which Fire TV devices get Alexa+ free

Amazon lists the eligible hardware as all current-generation Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party smart TVs with Alexa+ built in — Hisense and Panasonic sets are named specifically. The company says additional devices and regions may be added over time, which is the only thing resembling a commitment for buyers outside the US. There is no India, EU or UK date, and Amazon has not given one. Separately, Amazon is also moving Fire TV Sticks off Android to its own Vega OS, with Fire OS 16 reserved for its smart TVs.

What’s free, and what Amazon still charges for

This is the part worth reading carefully, because “free Alexa+” is doing a lot of work in the headline. Amazon’s own description of the free Fire TV tier covers conversational search, the ability to “more easily control your smart home voice controls,” and changing Alexa’s personality. That is genuinely useful, and it is also the shallow end.

The paid tier — a Prime membership or an Alexa+ Standard Plan subscription — is what unlocks Alexa+ on compatible Echo devices, plus, per Amazon, “Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes to automate household smart devices.” So basic voice commands to a smart lock or a light are free; the automation layer that makes a smart home actually automatic is not. Anyone reading the announcement as “Amazon just gave away its whole smart home stack” is reading it wrong.

Automatic also means nobody asked you

The flip side of “no action required” is that there is no opt-in. Fire TV owners who were content with the old, dumber Alexa are being moved onto a conversational AI assistant on a device that sits in the living room with a microphone, without a consent screen and without a documented way to decline the upgrade. Amazon frames the change as a gift; structurally it is a funnel, and a large one — the free tier exists in part to demonstrate what the paid tier does better.

Amazon’s stated engagement numbers back that reading. The company says customers “talk to Alexa+ on Fire TV nearly two times more than they did with the original Alexa,” and that they now pick Alexa’s top recommendation for search queries over 40% more often than with the previous assistant. Those are Amazon’s figures, not independently measured, but they describe exactly the outcome a recommendation engine on a shopping company’s television is built to produce.

What to do next

If you own an eligible Fire TV device in the US, nothing — the upgrade arrives on its own over the coming days. If you would rather it did not, the practical levers are the ones that already existed: mute the microphone on the remote or the Cube, and review your voice recordings and their retention setting in Alexa privacy settings before the new assistant starts building a preference profile from them. If you are outside the US, this changes nothing for you yet.
