Apple has published its official iPhone Duo repair manual. It includes do-it-yourself procedures for the inner display, its cover layer and the complete inner display assembly. There’s a catch for anyone hoping to start today. As of October 23, 9to5Mac reported that Duo parts weren’t yet sold in Apple’s Self Service Repair Store.
The inner display is the same screen some owners reported cracking near the hinge this week. Apple hasn’t connected the manual to those reports.
What the iPhone Duo repair manual covers
According to 9to5Mac’s list, the manual spans 20 component procedures. It also includes a First Steps guide and an operating manual for Apple’s Heated Display Removal Fixture. Apple advises reading the full manual first and only proceeding if you’re comfortable with the work.
- Internals: Back Glass, Camera, FaceTime Camera, Battery 1, Battery 2, Logic Board, Taptic Engine
- Audio: Bottom Speaker, Top Speaker, Main Microphone
- Displays: Outer Display, Cover Layer, Inner Display, Inner Display Assembly
- Frame and controls: Outer Front Camera, Input/Output Board, USB-C Connector, Enclosure, Volume Buttons, Touch ID/Camera Control Buttons
The cover layer job needs a fixture, not a kitchen table
Apple’s cover-layer document shows how much equipment one of these repairs takes. The tool list includes an inner display fixture, an inner display base, a fixture roller and a support bar. You also need a cover layer squeegee, ethanol wipes, compressed air and a microfiber cloth.

The old layer is peeled away at a 45-degree angle. Leftover residue gets cleaned with ethanol wipes, and Apple specifically warns against using IPA wipes. The new layer is lined up using the fixture’s micrometer X and Y knobs and the outer front camera hole. It’s then rolled on at 20 degrees, lifting to 70 degrees over the hinge.
That’s precision work on a dedicated fixture. It isn’t a quick fix with a pry tool and a spare evening.
Hinge troubleshooting guide
Earlier the same day, Apple also posted a separate support document for hinge problems, per 9to5Mac. It covers a hinge that feels loose, bent or broken, and one that makes unexpected noise.
What this means for iPhone Duo owners
Putting the full manual out publicly is a genuine plus for right-to-repair. Owners and independent shops can see exactly what each repair involves before deciding who does it. Apple already sells iPhone 18 Pro repair parts through the same store.
For now, though, the manual works mostly as a reference. Until Duo parts go on sale, owners can’t follow these steps, and the fixture-heavy procedures set a high bar even after that. If you’d rather have Apple do the work, see our breakdown of iPhone Duo repair fees, which includes the $49 cover-layer fee.
