If you still use the first Apple TV 4K from 2017, Apple now lists it as a vintage product. Repairs are still possible for now. The software side has already moved on, though, according to reports from MacRumors and 9to5Mac.
The change appears on Apple’s support page for getting service after a warranty expires. Under Apple TV products that are vintage worldwide, Apple names the 2017 Apple TV 4K. According to 9to5Mac, MacRumors was the first outlet to spot the listing.
What vintage status means for Apple TV 4K repairs
Apple calls a product vintage when it stopped selling it more than five but fewer than seven years ago. Once that gap passes seven years, the product becomes obsolete.
Apple’s policy promises service and parts for at least five years after it last sold a product. After that, repairs can continue for up to seven years, subject to parts availability. Where local law requires it, the window can run longer.
Obsolete products lose all hardware service. At that stage, Apple’s service providers can no longer order parts for them.
In practice, a vintage Apple TV 4K can still be fixed, but only if Apple has the part in stock. Apple doesn’t give a discontinuation date for the 2017 model. Its own definition only places the end of sales between five and seven years before the list was updated.
tvOS 27 support: which Apple TV models are eligible
Software updates are a separate question. Apple’s vintage list covers hardware service only, and it doesn’t say which tvOS version each model runs.
On that point, MacRumors reported on September 14 that tvOS 27 drops two older Apple TV models. That report landed on the day the update was released. 9to5Mac reported the same cutoff back in June, based on a post on X by Aaron Perris during the beta.
That June report also noted a conflict. Apple’s developer portal still listed the Apple TV HD at the time, which Perris called a mistake. The release-day MacRumors report names both older models as dropped.
Neither outlet links to an Apple compatibility page. As of October 12, no official Apple list of tvOS 27 devices has surfaced. Here is the split as MacRumors and 9to5Mac report it.
Supported on tvOS 27 (as reported):
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation): 2021 model
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation): 2022 model
Not supported on tvOS 27 (as reported):
- Apple TV 4K (1st generation): 2017 model, now on Apple’s vintage list
- Apple TV HD: 2015 model
What it means for 2017 Apple TV 4K owners

For owners of the 2017 box, there is now a gap between the two kinds of support. Going by those reports, it is already off the newest tvOS release. Apple’s repair window, meanwhile, could stay open for a few more years.
The Apple TV 4K launched in 2017 at $179 for 32GB and $199 for 64GB in the US. Many owners have had close to a decade of use from it.
The timing also lines up with a busy month for Apple. The company has confirmed an October 13 launch event, with smart home gear expected. A new Apple TV 4K is reportedly shipping on October 30, though that report is single-source and Apple hasn’t confirmed it.
If your 2017 model still works and you were weighing an upgrade, waiting a few weeks to see what Apple announces costs you nothing.
