Google is retiring Gemini Gems, the custom-assistant feature in the Gemini app, and replacing it with skills. An in-app notice inside the Gems manager puts the switchover on November 17, 2026, as reproduced by 9to5Google. Gems are free to every Gemini user today. Skills are limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers today. The notice itself does not say what free-tier users will get once the migration finishes.
A Gem is a customized version of Gemini that you save and reuse. Each one can have a default tool such as Create image or Canvas, specific files attached for context, and a share link. Google opened Gems to free users in March 2025, and they have stayed free since.
The in-app notice, per 9to5Google, reads:
Starting November 17, 2026, we’ll automatically begin migrating your Gems to skills. You will be able to use your Gems until they migrate.
When Gemini Gems lock and migrate: October 13 and November 17
Android Authority spotted both dates three weeks earlier, on September 9, in a Gemini app teardown. Its code analysis found that Gem creation and editing switch off on October 13, 2026. That earlier cutoff is still single-sourced. Treat it as reported rather than independently confirmed.
The November 17 date is on firmer ground. Android Authority’s code string and the live in-app notice arrived by completely different routes and land on the same day. Existing Gems keep working right up to the migration.
Skills are a Pro and Ultra feature right now
Skills arrived alongside Gemini Spark and work differently from Gems. You call one with a slash command directly in the prompt box. You can also stack more than one in a single request. Gems, by contrast, mean a detour to the side panel each time. Access today is limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. It also covers only the Gemini mobile app, Gemini on Mac, and gemini.google.com.
Android Authority’s read is that many users will lose free access to a Gemini customization tool they use today. That is its inference, not something Google has confirmed. Google could still open skills to the free tier before the deadline.
Our own concern is narrower and sits with the calendar. If Android Authority’s October 13 date holds, Gem editing locks for everyone about five weeks before the migration. The notice says nothing about the free tier on the other side of it. Worth noting down how each of your Gems is set up before that date.
What is still unclear
- Free-tier access: whether Google opens skills to non-subscribers before Gems shut down.
- Feature parity: whether skills keep the default tool selection, attached files, and link sharing that Gems offer.
- Official word: as of September 28, no Google blog post or press statement on the change has surfaced. The help article linked from the notice wasn’t loading, and 9to5Google notes the notice may have rolled out slightly early.
