Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 17 5G in India at Rs 23,999, with sales starting September 10. The India model carries a 7,900mAh battery, 400mAh larger than the global version Xiaomi announced in August. It also carries a 720p display, which is the part worth thinking about before you buy.

Sales begin on September 10 through Amazon.in, mi.com, Xiaomi retail outlets and offline stores. Colours are Absolute Black, Endless Blue and Eternal Orange, the last of which gets a leather-look finish. Xiaomi’s own India product page confirms the September 10 sale date.

The battery is bigger. The screen is not better.
Xiaomi is leading its India marketing on the 7,900mAh cell, and fairly — that is a genuinely large battery, and the India variant really does get more capacity than the global model’s 7,500mAh. Xiaomi quotes 2.5-day battery life and up to 146 hours of music playback.
What the marketing does not lead on is the panel. At 1600 x 720 across 6.9 inches, this is an HD+ LCD stretched over a very large screen, which works out to roughly 255 pixels per inch. Text and interface edges will look visibly softer than on a 1080p phone of the same size. Xiaomi’s own page describes it as offering “HD clarity on a large display,” which is an accurate way of saying it is not full HD.
At Rs 23,999 that is a real question mark. Buyers spending Rs 24,000 generally expect a 1080p panel by now, and anyone moving up from a 15,000-rupee phone will notice the difference the first time they read anything on it. The 120Hz refresh rate helps scrolling feel smooth, but refresh rate and resolution are different things, and a fast 720p panel is still a 720p panel.
The honest way to read this phone is that Xiaomi spent its budget on battery capacity and the RGB camera ring rather than on the display. Whether that is the right trade depends entirely on what you use the phone for. If it is calls, WhatsApp and long days away from a charger, the 7,900mAh cell is worth more to you than pixel density. If you read, watch or game on it, look at what else Rs 24,000 buys — and what a step up costs. The vivo T5 5G, for one, pairs a similarly large 7,050mAh battery with a Rs 34,999 price tag.
