Android Documents Backup Is Rolling Out, and It Eats Your Free 15GB

Android’s new Documents backup is now reaching phones widely, and it does something Android’s backup system has never done before: it copies the files sitting in your local storage — the PDFs, spreadsheets and Chrome downloads you never deliberately put in the cloud — up to Google Drive on a nightly schedule. It arrives with the latest stable Google Play services build, and it consumes the same free 15GB every other Google service is already competing for.

What the Android Documents backup actually uploads

Google first said this was coming back in February, began a limited rollout earlier in July, and as of 30 July it is showing up on stable Google Play services 26.26 on a growing number of devices, per 9to5Google. The scope is files stored on the device itself: .DOC, .PPT, .XLS, .PDF and other documents saved locally. In practice that mostly means your Downloads folder.

On the Drive side, a new Android backups folder appears in My Drive. Inside it sits a folder named after your phone — multiple devices each get their own — and inside that, typically a Download folder, which can also pull in files received over Quick Share. Backups run on the automatic nightly cycle, though you can trigger one by hand.

One behaviour worth knowing before you switch it on: turning the feature off later does not remove what has already been uploaded. Those copies stay in Drive until you delete them yourself.

How to turn Documents backup on or off

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to Google → All services, then Backup under “Backup and restore”. 9to5Google reports the route as Settings → Accounts and backup → Google Backup on its test device, so the exact wording varies by skin.
  3. Look for the new Documents entry on the backup list, sitting between Photos & videos and Other device data.
  4. Toggle it on or off. If you do not see it yet, your device has not received the Play services update — the rollout is server-side and staged.

The catch Google is quiet about

Two things deserve a hard look before you leave this enabled.

The first is storage. Documents backup counts against your Google Account quota, which is 15GB free and shared with Gmail, Google Photos and Drive itself. Google confirmed in July that Android backups as a whole now count against that quota. A Downloads folder full of PDFs is not enormous, but a phone that has been accumulating files for two years can be — and the account that runs out of space is the same one your email lands in. The exit route from that squeeze is a Google One subscription, which is not an accident of design.

The second is what ends up there. Your Downloads folder is not a curated document library; it is where bank statements, salary slips, boarding passes, medical reports and signed contracts pile up. Switching this on quietly relocates all of that into a cloud account that may be signed in on a shared laptop or an old tablet. Google’s own backup help page says that “All data, including photos and videos, messages and more are encrypted as they move between your device, Google services, and our data centers,” and separately notes that only some data receives the extra layer of encryption tied to your screen lock. That page has not yet been updated to say which side of the line documents fall on.

None of which makes the feature a bad one — a phone that is lost or stolen takes its local files with it, and that has been a genuine gap in Android’s backup story for years. But it should be a decision you make deliberately, folder by folder if you can, rather than one that arrives switched on with a Play services update.
