Spotify Running Mode Is iOS-Only at Launch, and Android Misses Out

Spotify’s new Running Mode turns a playlist into a structured running session — you pick a workout shape, a duration and a target tempo, and the app builds the music around it. It went live on 30 July 2026. It is not on Android, and Spotify has not said when it will be.

Spotify Running Mode is iOS-only, and only in seven countries

The platform limit is not a rollout wave that Android will catch in a few days — it is written into the announcement itself. Spotify’s newsroom post says:

“Premium users on iOS in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden can find Running Mode in the Fitness Hub beginning today.”

Three gates in one sentence, then. You need Premium, you need an iPhone, and you need to be in one of seven countries. India, every market in the EU except Ireland and Sweden, Brazil, Indonesia and the rest of Spotify’s largest listener bases are all outside the launch. Spotify closes the post by repeating that it is “rolling out for iOS users in select markets beginning today” — again with no Android timing attached.

That ordering is worth naming plainly. Android is the larger platform by installed base almost everywhere Spotify operates, and the countries left out include the ones where Android’s share is highest. A feature that ships to iPhones in seven wealthy markets first is a business decision about which subscribers get courted, not a technical constraint, and it is fair to read it that way.

What Running Mode actually does

  • 25 presets — curated starting points spanning workout types and music styles, meant to be customised rather than played as-is.
  • Session shape — you choose interval, steady or pyramid, plus how long the run should be.
  • Tempo matching — you set a target beats-per-minute figure and Spotify selects tracks to sit at it, transitioning between songs as the session progresses.
  • Genre steering — you tell it what kind of music you are in the mood for before it builds the list.
  • Optional audio cues — spoken structure updates and check-ins during the run. English only at launch.

It lives in the Fitness Hub, the section Spotify added in April alongside Peloton classes and creator workout videos. Spotify frames it as a descendant of Prompted Playlists, noting that fitness prompts turned out to be one of that feature’s most-used cases.

Android gets the smaller half of the announcement

Spotify shipped a second feature the same day: User Notes, which lets you attach a short public text note to a track inside your own playlist — the reason you added it, when you first heard it, who it reminds you of. That one, per Android Authority, is going out on Android as well as iOS, so Android users are not shut out of the day entirely. They are just getting the caption box rather than the running coach.

If you run with Spotify on Android today, nothing changes: the Fitness Hub, Peloton content and ordinary BPM-tagged running playlists are still there, and third-party apps that pace music to cadence still work. What you do not have is Spotify’s own version, and there is currently no announced date on which you will.
