Ask Google Pay: Gemini Taps Your Spending and Credit Data

Google has launched Ask Google Pay, a Gemini-powered conversational assistant built into the Google Pay app in India, and it does not just read your UPI history. Google says the suggestions it produces are drawn from “your transaction history and credit report data with Google Pay” — two very different categories of financial information, now feeding the same chat box. It is opt-in and live from today, alongside a second announcement, the Google Pay Flex SBI Card.

What Ask Google Pay actually does

It is a chat surface inside the app rather than a separate product. You can ask it where your money went last month, ask for savings tips, ask it to surface offers matched to how you spend — Google’s own example is finding the right credit card for your travel expenses — and ask it to explain financial terms such as SIPs, credit scores, compounding interest or the difference between tax regimes. Queries work by text or by voice, and Google says support is already available in 10 Indian languages.

The framing is deliberately cautious. Google describes it as an experience that “helps you analyze your spending patterns and helps you with information related to managing your money,” and adds that it “provides financial information and insights for educational purposes only.”

The part worth reading twice

On privacy, Google’s line is short and absolute:

We keep your financial data safe and entirely under your control.

That is the claim. Here is what it leaves unsaid. Transaction history is data you generated inside Google Pay; credit report data is not — it is bureau information about your borrowing, collected under a separate consent, and pulling it into a general-purpose assistant is a meaningful expansion of what the app knows about you rather than a UI change. “Opt-in” is the right default and Google deserves credit for it, but opting in once is what most people will remember doing; there is no published detail yet on how long conversations are retained, whether they can be deleted individually, or whether the data informs offer targeting elsewhere in the app. And “educational purposes only” is a liability disclaimer, not a quality guarantee — an assistant that recommends a specific credit card is doing something that looks a lot like advice, whatever the footnote says. Check the consent screen before you tap through it, not after.

This lands the same week Gemini has been pushed into comment threads in Google Docs. The pattern is consistent: Gemini is arriving inside apps people already have open, not as a destination.

Google Pay Flex SBI Card

The second launch is a co-branded credit card with SBI Card, built on the RuPay network and available from today. It follows Flex by Google Pay, which Google introduced earlier this year.

  • Application: Directly inside Google Pay, in a few minutes, with no physical paperwork.
  • Networks: Works on both RuPay and Visa.
  • Rewards: Stars on every Flex transaction, instantly redeemable, with 1 Star equal to ₹1.
  • Repayment: Option to convert your latest outstanding card bill into EMIs.
  • Coming soon: Flex card customers become eligible for the Google AI Plus plan — including its 400GB and 2TB storage tiers — at 50 percent off for one year, plus a discount across the full range of Google Pixel smartphones. Terms and conditions apply.

Note the shape of that last bundle: a credit card that discounts a Google subscription and Google hardware. It is a perfectly ordinary loyalty play, and it is also how a payments app becomes the front door to everything else Google sells you.
