Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition with in-display fingerprint sensor announced

After loads of speculation, Xiaomi announced MI 8 and Mi Explorer Edition devices as expected. Both these devices offer flagship hardware and includes many new features. Xiaomi Mi 8 features a 6.21-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with 18.7:9 aspect ratio having  88.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor along with 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage while the Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage only.

Both the devices runs with Android 8.1 (Oreo) with MIUI 9 upgradable to MIUI 10 (snnounced today). In terms of camera, both the devices feature a dual camera module at rear with twin 12MP sensors having 1.4-micron pixels, OIS, dual-pixel autofocus and AI-powered portrait mode. Xiaomi claimes that the Mi 8 got a score of 105 for photo in DxOMark’s rankings which is same as that of Samsung Galaxy S9. On the front, they feature a 20MP snapper with real-time AI portraits for selfies & video calls.

Mi 8 comes with fingerprint sensor at rear with IR Face unlock while the Explorer edition comes with pressure-sensitive In-display fingerprint sensor with 3D Face unlock feature.

Mi 8 is priced as follows:

  • 6GB + 64GB   : 2699 yuan (~US$ 420 / Rs. 28,500)
  • 6GB + 128GB : 2999 yuan (~US$ 470 / Rs. 31,600)
  • 6GB + 256GB : 3299 yuan (~US$ 510 / Rs. 34,800)

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage having transparent back and an in-display fingerprint sensor is priced at 3699 yuan (~US$ 580 / Rs. 39,000).

Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE will go on sale in China starting on June 5, and June 8 respectively.
