Truecaller Scam Checker: Free Web Tool to Vet Links and Numbers

Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a free tool that tells you whether a phone number, link or message looks fraudulent. It runs on the web and on Android, and the basic check needs no app install and no sign-in. India gets it first. If someone forwards you something that feels off, you can paste it into a browser tab and get a verdict.

What Truecaller Scam Checker actually checks

Paste in a shortened link and the service expands it, following redirects to the page it really lands on. That alone answers a lot of questions, because hiding the destination is the whole point of a shortener in a scam message. The result is then matched against Truecaller’s own risk database and other fraud signals.

Scam Checker also pulls in related community reports from ScamFeed, Truecaller’s crowd-sourced log of live scams. In India that feed carries roughly 20,000 live reports, with about 1,300 new ones added every week. Truecaller says it plans to widen the range of scam types the tool can detect. Screenshot uploads are also on the roadmap, according to the company.

The free tier stops short of caller ID

This is the limit worth knowing before you rely on it. Scam Checker returns a fraud verdict, not an identity. Looking up the name attached to a phone number still requires the full Truecaller app with a sign-in.

That split looks deliberate. The free web tool is genuinely useful on its own, and it is also a funnel. Every lookup that ends with a partial answer is a nudge toward installing the app and creating an account. Use it for what it does well, and go in knowing where the sign-in wall sits.

Why Truecaller is building this now

Truecaller’s core caller-ID business is under pressure in its largest market. Indian carriers are rolling out government-backed Calling Name Presentation, while Apple and Google keep strengthening spam protection inside the OS itself. India’s telecom regulator has also told caller-ID apps to share spam reports with operators. A free web service that needs no install is one sensible answer to all of that.

The company also has a read on where the demand sits. It estimates that around 14 million web searches a month are already people trying to check a suspicious number or link. Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala told TechCrunch that these moments tend to arrive inside some other app, not inside Truecaller’s own. “What people do in that moment is search.”

The scale numbers give some sense of the problem. Truecaller says it evaluated 12.9 billion messages globally between September 14 and 20, 2026. Of those, 20.3 million were flagged as fraudulent. The company reports more than 500 million users worldwide, over 350 million of them in India.

Pricing and availability

Scam Checker is free, with no subscription attached to the basic check. India is the launch market. Truecaller says it will expand the service to Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia. No dates were given for those rollouts.
