TCL Tab A1 NXTPAPER Goes on Sale at $249 With an 11-Inch Matte Screen

TCL has quietly put the Tab A1 NXTPAPER on sale in the US, an 11-inch Android tablet whose selling point is a matte anti-glare display and a bundled stylus. TCL’s own store lists it at $249.99, marked down from a $299.99 list price, with the stylus included. The catch is inside: the processor is a MediaTek part whose design roots go back to 2022, in a tablet TCL is asking flagship-of-the-budget-tier money for.

Pricing and availability

The tablet is on sale now in the US through TCL’s own store. These are the prices listed on TCL’s US site at the time of writing:

  • TCL Tab A1 NXTPAPER — $249.99 sale price, against a $299.99 list price
  • TCL Tab A1 (non-NXTPAPER) — $179.99 sale price, against a $219.99 list price

Note that $249.99 is a promotional price, not a permanent one. 9to5Google reports the NXTPAPER model going for $229 on Amazon, which we have not independently verified. Either way, the practical decision is the $70 gap between the two Tab A1 models, and that gap buys you exactly two things.

What the NXTPAPER version actually adds

Very little, and TCL is upfront about it. The NXTPAPER and non-NXTPAPER Tab A1 models share the same design and essentially the same specifications. The differences are a matte finish on the display and an included compatible stylus.

That matte finish is the whole pitch. NXTPAPER is TCL’s anti-glare, low-reflection screen treatment, aimed at people who read for long stretches and find a glossy panel tiring. If you want a cheap Android tablet mainly for books, documents and note-taking, the finish plus a bundled stylus is a coherent $70. If you want it for video, the matte layer works against you.

Specifications

The rest of the spec sheet is standard budget-tablet fare, with one component that stands out for the wrong reason.

  • Display — 11-inch, 2112 x 1320, 90Hz, 16:10 aspect ratio, matte NXTPAPER finish
  • Processor — MediaTek Helio G100
  • Memory and storage — 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, microSD card slot
  • Battery — 8,000mAh
  • Software — Android 16 out of the box
  • In the box — compatible stylus

The chip is the part to think about

The Helio G100 arrived in 2024, and it is a light revision of the Helio G99, which launched in 2022. TCL is putting a chip of that vintage in a tablet with a $299.99 list price, in September 2026.

That is not a fatal flaw for a device aimed at reading and light browsing, and the G99 family has a long record of doing that job without complaint. But it is worth naming for what it is. A four-year-old chip design is the cheapest way to hit a price point, and the marketing leads with the screen finish rather than the silicon. The practical consequence for a buyer is a shorter useful life. An older part gives you less runway on a tablet you would reasonably expect to keep for four or five years.

Android 16 out of the box in September 2026 is the other half of that picture, at a point when Android 17 has already shipped and is on its second quarterly release cycle. TCL has not published an update commitment for the Tab A1 line, so treat the software timeline as unknown rather than assume it follows the phone makers’ four-year policies.
