Spotify Tests a Skip Ahead Button That Lets Premium Users Bypass Podcast Ads

Spotify is testing a “Skip Ahead” button that lets Premium subscribers bypass podcast ads with a single tap, according to Podnews, which first reported the experiment. The feature is currently available to some Premium users in the US and UK.

The pill-shaped button appears to the right of the Chapters button above the podcast title when an ad break starts. One tap jumps the listener past the entire ad segment — a task that would otherwise require roughly nine presses of the standard 15-second skip button plus manual adjustment. Podnews reports the button still takes a couple of seconds to respond, suggesting it remains in early testing.

Spotify Skip Ahead: Who Benefits and Who Loses

For listeners, the appeal is obvious. Podcast ads — especially host-read mid-roll spots and pre-roll sponsorships — are the one category of advertising that Spotify Premium has never removed. Unlike music ads, which disappear with a subscription, podcast ads are placed and sold by creators or their networks, outside Spotify’s direct control. Skip Ahead would give Premium subscribers a way around them.

For creators, the implications are less comfortable. Podcast advertising depends on the assumption that listeners hear the ad. If a significant share of the audience starts skipping reliably, advertisers will notice — and may pay less or pull out entirely. One podcast ad company quoted by Podnews described the feature as “fraudulent behaviour,” arguing that advertisers purchased impressions Spotify is now actively helping listeners avoid.

Spotify’s own statement was noncommittal: “We regularly conduct tests at Spotify — some tests become permanent features, while others help inform future product development.”

It is worth noting that fewer than 10 percent of podcast ad breaks are currently skipped by listeners, according to analytics data cited by Podnews. That low skip rate is partly what makes podcast ads valuable to brands. A one-tap skip button built into the player could change that ratio quickly.

What This Means for Android Podcast Listeners

Podnews found the Skip Ahead button active on shows from competing podcast networks including Acast, Audacy, and the New York Times, as well as Spotify’s own programming like The Bill Simmons Podcast. If the test goes wide, it would affect ads across the entire Spotify podcast catalog, not just Spotify-exclusive shows.

For now, there is no way to opt into the test — it appears to be a server-side rollout to a subset of Premium accounts. Spotify has not said whether or when Skip Ahead might become a permanent feature.
