Spotify Will Label AI-Generated Artist Profiles From Mid-September

Spotify will start putting an AI Persona badge on artist profiles whose public identity appears to be AI-generated rather than a real person, with the label showing up from mid-September. The company announced the change on August 11, and paired it with a bigger decision than the badge itself: profiles flagged as AI Personas will be left out of Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.

Where the AI Persona badge appears

From mid-September the badge shows on artist profiles — in the banner and the About section — as well as in Search results and on track rows inside playlists. Tapping it tells you which route the label took: whether the artist disclosed the AI Persona themselves, or whether Spotify’s review team made the call.

Spotify’s stated reason is listener complaints rather than any legal push. In its own words: “Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated.”

How profiles get flagged

Two paths. Artists can self-disclose from today through Spotify for Artists. Separately, Spotify says it will review profiles itself and identify those whose public identity — name and imagery — appears to present a photorealistic AI-generated person, explicitly stating it “won’t rely on self-disclosure alone.” Flagged artists are notified and can either self-disclose or appeal. A listener-facing reporting tool is promised “in the coming months” with no date.

Note what the badge is not. Spotify is clear that it covers the artist’s public identity, not how the music was made — a human artist who leaned heavily on AI tools to produce a track does not get a badge, and that disclosure lives in the separate AI Credits and SongDNA features instead.

The two limits worth knowing

First, coverage is deliberately partial. Spotify says it will “start with artists who have met defined audience thresholds,” without publishing what those thresholds are. That means the labelling is designed around the profiles listeners actually visit, and the long tail of low-traffic AI uploads — the material most people mean when they complain about AI slop — is not where this starts.

Second, the recommendation exclusion has a carve-out. Spotify says you will not see AI Persona music in personalized recommendations “unless you follow AI Personas, for example” — a phrasing loose enough to cover more behaviour than an explicit follow. There is also no listener switch here: you cannot turn AI Personas off across search or playlists, only spot the badge once it exists. Spotify decides what gets recommended, and you get a label after the fact.

Still, this is a real disclosure obligation on a platform that had none, applied without waiting to be forced, and the default exclusion from recommendations is the part with actual teeth. The test will be mid-September, when it becomes visible how many badges Spotify’s review process actually issues against how much synthetic material is on the service.
