Google’s August Update Drops Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 Series Without Explanation

Google’s August 2026 security update for Pixel phones has quietly dropped support for six older models: the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, and 7a. None of these devices received the August patch (build CP2A.260805.005), which began rolling out on August 4 — and Google has offered no public explanation for the omission.

The exclusion of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is not entirely surprising. Google officially confirmed in July that both phones have reached end-of-life status, with Android 17 QPR1 (expected around September 2026) slated as their final major update. But the Pixel 6a and the entire Pixel 7 series dropping off the August patch is a more significant signal — none of these models have been formally declared end-of-life yet.

Which Pixel Phones Got the August 2026 Update

The August security patch went out to 13 Pixel models spanning three generations:

  • Pixel 8 series: Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9 series: Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a
  • Pixel 10 series: Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, 10a

A Rogers Canada variant of the Pixel 9 also received a separate build (CP2A.260805.005.A1).

Pixel 10 Bug Fixes

The update includes three fixes specifically targeting the Pixel 10 lineup:

  • Gaming crash fix: Resolves a crash in certain gaming apps under specific conditions
  • Touch panel fix: Addresses an issue where the touch panel could become unresponsive
  • GPU performance: General improvements for GPU performance

On the security side, the general Android 17 bulletin lists no newly resolved vulnerabilities this month, though Google’s dedicated Pixel security bulletin includes one additional fix.

What This Means for Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 Owners

The Pixel 7 series launched in October 2022 with a promise of five years of security updates, which would nominally extend through October 2027. The Pixel 6a, released in July 2022, carried the same three-year OS update and five-year security patch commitment as the rest of the Pixel 6 line. Missing a monthly patch does not necessarily mean permanent end-of-support — Google has occasionally skipped months for older devices before resuming the next cycle — but the pattern is worth watching closely.

Droid Life, which has been tracking Pixel update cadence across generations, notes that update consistency for these older models has been declining over time and expects formal end-of-support announcements for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in the coming months. Whether the Pixel 7 series follows the same trajectory remains to be seen, but owners should be prepared for increasingly irregular update schedules going forward.

If you own one of the affected models, check Settings > System > Software updates to confirm your current patch level. The July 2026 patch remains the most recent for these devices.
