Tensor G6 MediaTek Modem: Pixel 11 Pro Fold FCC Filing (Rumor)

A new FCC filing points to a Tensor G6 MediaTek modem inside Google’s next chip — and if the reading holds up, it would be the first time ever that a Google Tensor processor ditches Samsung’s Exynos modem. To be clear up front: this is a leak, not an official Google announcement. What makes it worth your attention today is that the evidence now comes from a real government document rather than the usual anonymous tipsters.

On July 10, 2026, an FCC SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) test filing surfaced for a Google device with the model number GZDQ6, which prior leaks have tied to the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Buried on page 30 of the SAR test report is a reference to “MediaTek algorithms” and MediaTek signal processing — language you would not expect to see if Google were still using a Samsung Exynos modem.

Why the Tensor G6 MediaTek modem rumor matters now

The idea that Tensor G6 might drop Exynos for MediaTek is not new. It has been circulating in leaks since at least May 2026. What changed on July 10 is the source: instead of a leaker’s word, there is now primary-source regulatory paperwork that appears to corroborate it. Android Authority was the outlet that spotted the specific page-30 detail, and Droid-Life independently confirmed the wider filing.

Here is what the FCC document itself actually contains, and nothing more: the GZDQ6 model number, the “MediaTek algorithms” reference on page 30, support for 5G including mmWave, satellite connectivity, NFC, UWB, Thread, and wireless charging, and SAR testing in both open (unfolded) and closed (folded) states, as foldables require. The document does not name a specific modem model.

That last point matters. Separate leaks — not the FCC filing — have identified the part as a MediaTek M90 (chip model MT6986D). Treat that model number as rumored, because the regulatory paperwork does not spell it out. And treat the modem switch overall as a well-evidenced rumor rather than a done deal: Google has not commented on any of this, and the “MediaTek algorithms” line is being interpreted by outlets as evidence of a change, not stated by Google as one.

What a modem switch could mean for you

Every Tensor generation so far — G1 through G5 — has paired with a Samsung Exynos modem, and that modem has long taken the blame from reviewers and users for the Pixel line’s weaker cellular reception and heavier battery drain compared with Qualcomm-powered rivals. MediaTek’s modem tech reportedly leans on AI-based signal processing tuned for power efficiency. If the switch is real and it delivers, Pixel 11 buyers could finally see the practical upside: steadier signal and better battery life.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is one of four devices in the lineup — alongside the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL — all expected to share the Tensor G6 chip. Google has officially confirmed the Pixel 11 series for August 12, 2026 at a Made by Google event in New York City, so any modem change would be settled then. Expect the remaining Pixel 11 models to clear the FCC in the coming weeks.
