EU Registry Grades the Pixel 11 Pro Below Its Cheaper Sibling

The EU’s product registry has published durability grades for the whole Pixel 11 line, and the phone that scores worst is the one Google positions as its toughest. The Pixel 11 Pro is graded B for durability. The cheaper Pixel 11, the larger Pixel 11 Pro XL and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold are all graded A. The number underneath that grade is a drop test, and the Pro survived roughly a third fewer falls than its siblings.

What EPREL actually measures

EPREL is the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling, and since the EU’s smartphone ecodesign rules came into force, every phone sold in the bloc has to be registered there with graded scores from A to G. Unlike a marketing claim, these grades come from a defined test regime, and the free-fall figure behind the durability grade is a count of drops the device withstands without defect. It is one of the few directly comparable durability numbers a buyer can get before a phone has been in the world long enough for real-world failure patterns to show up.

The Pixel 11 durability grades, model by model

  • Pixel 11 (GUJ0N): durability A, from 270 falls without defect; 4,840mAh battery
  • Pixel 11 Pro (GM45K): durability B, from 180 falls; 4,707mAh battery
  • Pixel 11 Pro XL (G4HCD): durability A, from 270 falls; 5,000mAh battery
  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold (GZDQ6): durability A, from 210 falls closed and 45 unfolded; 4,658mAh battery

Every model in the series is graded B for energy efficiency and B for repairability, and every model is registered as retaining at least 80% of its battery capacity through 1,000 charge cycles.

Why the contrast matters

In Google’s own launch announcement, the company says of the Pro models that “when paired with our drop-resistant design introduced in our Pixel 9 series, these are our most durable Pro phones yet,” alongside a new anti-scratch display coating it credits with more than double the scratch resistance of the previous generation. None of that is necessarily untrue — scratch resistance and drop survival are different properties. But a buyer reading that the Pro is the most durable Pixel yet would not reasonably guess that the $1,099 Pro is the model the EU registry grades below the $899 Pixel 11, on the one durability metric that is independently defined and publicly filed.

The most useful takeaway is a practical one. If drop survival is what you actually care about — and for most people it is the failure that ends a phone’s life — the base Pixel 11 and the Pro XL are the better-graded choices in this generation, and the Pro is the outlier. That is also worth weighing against the other Pro-tier compromise this generation, since the Pro models also dropped to 12GB of base RAM while costing $100 more. And the Pro Fold’s unfolded figure of 45 falls is a reminder that no foldable, Google’s included, is a phone you want to drop while it is open.
