Apple has confirmed on the record that some iPhone 18 Pro Max units on AT&T can lose cellular service entirely. That includes the ability to dial 911. The company says iOS 27.0.1 and a new carrier settings update are meant to help prevent the problem. Phones already affected cannot be repaired in software. According to 9to5Mac, those units require a hardware replacement.

Apple issued its statement on October 2 at 1:47pm PT. That came hours after AT&T began texting customers about the iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular issue. Here is Apple’s statement to 9to5Mac:
We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also issuing a carrier settings update today. These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.
Read that wording carefully. Apple says the updates help prevent the issue. It does not say they repair a phone that has already failed.
What affected owners actually need to do
If your iPhone 18 Pro Max has already dropped off AT&T’s network, software will not bring it back. Replacements run through Apple Support, an Apple Store, or an AT&T retail location. That means a trip to a counter, not a tap on a settings screen.
If your phone still works normally, the preventive steps are worth taking now. Install iOS 27.0.1 from Settings, then General, then Software Update. The carrier settings update downloads automatically within 14 days. You can trigger it sooner by opening Settings, then General, then About.
Why AT&T’s “just update” message doesn’t hold up
AT&T’s automated text told customers an important Apple update was available. It warned that some phones may be unable to complete calls, texts or data, including calls to 911. It then urged an immediate move to iOS 27.0.1. The framing implied the update was the fix. For anyone already affected, it isn’t.
There is a second problem with that framing. Apple’s public release notes for iOS 27.0.1 list only Face ID and camera performance fixes. No cellular fix is named there at all. Some owners who installed the update say the service drops continued afterwards. For a defect that can block an emergency call, a patch note that skips the defect is not good enough.
One detail narrows the blast radius. The US iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Qualcomm modem. The iPhone 18 Pro ships with Apple’s own C2 modem instead. 9to5Mac reports that the iPhone 18 Pro is not affected by these AT&T connectivity problems.
If you bought an iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T recently, the practical advice is simple. Update today, then test an outgoing call. If the phone cannot reach the network, book the replacement rather than waiting for another software release.
