HSBC has blocked its Android mobile banking app from running inside Samsung Secure Folder and Android Private Space. The restriction took effect without prior notice. Customers attempting to launch the app inside isolated containers are now locked out entirely.

HSBC Explains the Container Restriction
The sudden block impacts users relying on Knox Secure Folder and Android’s native Private Space. Customers must uninstall the application from these secure environments. Access requires reinstalling the app on the primary, unpartitioned profile.
HSBC UK issued a statement defending the operational change. The bank characterized the block as a “proportionate security control designed to mitigate a foreseeable security risk.”
According to the lender, sandboxed profiles could impede fraud detection systems. The bank claims isolated containers prevent rapid identification of device threats. It also asserted that the environment might hinder timely fraud warnings.
A Questionable Step for User Privacy
The bank’s justification is perplexing for security experts. Samsung Knox Secure Folder leverages hardware-backed encryption to isolate sensitive data. Similarly, Android Private Space isolates financial applications from malicious background processes.
Google introduced native Private Space alongside recent security improvements seen in the September 2026 Pixel feature drop. These spaces stop spyware and rogue screen grabbers from monitoring banking sessions. Most competing international financial institutions continue operating seamlessly inside Knox containers.
Framing the removal of hardware-backed container protection as a security upgrade is a step backward. Forcing sensitive financial tools into the unpartitioned main space leaves users more vulnerable to physical snoopers.
How Affected Users Can Restore Access
Customers currently locked out have only one path forward. You must remove the HSBC app from your Secure Folder or Private Space. Next, download a fresh copy directly from the Google Play Store into your main profile.
You will need to complete device registration and biometric verification again. As of September 2026, HSBC has not indicated any plans to restore sandboxed workspace support.
