Google rolled out a substantial update to Google Home and Gemini for Home on August 5, bringing interactive AI storytelling, smarter alarms and timers, expanded camera support, and home automations in new languages.
Gemini for Home Gets Interactive Storytime
The headline addition is Interactive Storytime, a Gemini-powered feature that lets families co-create stories through voice commands on compatible speakers and displays. You can ask Gemini to invent an original adventure, swap characters mid-scene (replacing the Big Bad Wolf with a T. rex, for example), or put your own kids into the narrative. It works in real time — interrupt and redirect the plot as you go, or remix a classic fairy tale into something new.
It is a creative use of conversational AI, though parents should note that Gemini for Home remains in Early Access, and the quality of improvised storytelling will depend on how well the model handles open-ended prompts from young children.
Smarter Alarms and Timers
Gemini for Home now handles alarm and timer requests with better natural-language understanding. It recognizes whether you prefer a 12-hour or 24-hour clock, answers “how much time is left?” queries more accurately, and can parse descriptive requests like “set a timer for cooking a soft-boiled egg.” Turning off a device or dimming a light now plays a soft, descending confirmation tone instead of the old chime, and a bug that left the speaker’s light ring pulsing after routines finished has been fixed.
Camera Support and App Improvements
The Google Home app now supports cameras from Eufy, Tapo, Wyze, Reolink, and Nanit in its unified feed. Other camera improvements include a quick “Save Clip” shortcut for downloading event recordings, auto full-screen in landscape orientation, extended uninterrupted live streaming, and quicker stream reconnects on Android. Home Premium Advanced subscribers also get AI-generated event summaries for camera recordings.
Smart lock integration has been improved with clearer operation notifications and better error handling for Works with Google Home locks.
Automations Expand to More Countries
Home app automations are now available in additional locales, including Russia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam, with support for Arabic, English, French, and Spanish in the expanded countries.
Google also confirmed that the brief Spotify outage that affected Home speakers on July 27 has been resolved.
