Google Maps Can Now Order Food and Read Your Gmail Through Ask Maps

Google Maps can now order food for you, find hotels that match your taste, and pull in your flight and dinner reservations to shape its suggestions — all without leaving the app. The company announced a batch of agentic upgrades to its AI-powered Ask Maps feature today, expanding what started as a conversational search tool into something closer to a personal concierge that acts on your behalf.

Ask Maps Can Now Order Food and Find Hotels

The headline addition is agentic food ordering. You can now tell Ask Maps something like “order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home,” and it will find open restaurants along your route, match your dietary needs, and add the dish to your cart for checkout. At launch, this works through restaurant platform partners Square and Toast, with Uber Eats support coming later.

Hotel and event discovery follow the same conversational pattern — ask for a hotel within walking distance of gyms and restaurants, or for live comedy shows near your office tonight, and Ask Maps will surface options with booking links. Conversational contributions are new too: upload a photo of a storefront sign, and Maps will extract the business hours and ask you to confirm before submitting the update.

Food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are rolling out now in the US only, with more countries to follow.

Personal Intelligence Connects Gmail to Maps

The more consequential change is Personal Intelligence, a Gemini-powered layer that connects Ask Maps to your Gmail so it can factor in existing plans — upcoming flights, dinner reservations, hotel bookings — when answering your questions. Google says Calendar support is coming soon.

The privacy trade-off here is worth spelling out. Personal Intelligence is disabled by default, and Google says you have to opt in before Maps touches your email. That is the right default. But the direction is clear: Google wants Maps to read your inbox to sell you more contextual suggestions routed through its own partner stack (Square, Toast, Uber Eats — not the restaurant directly). Users who opt in should understand they are giving Maps ongoing access to their email content, not just answering a one-time prompt.

Live Transit and Global Expansion

Real-time transit updates round out the release — you can now check live delay information for buses, trains, subways, and ferries directly through Ask Maps. This feature, along with the broader personalization and conversation memory, is rolling out everywhere Ask Maps is available. As of today, that footprint has expanded to include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, in addition to its existing markets.

Pricing and Availability

All Ask Maps features are free. The agentic features (food ordering, hotel and event discovery, conversational contributions) are US-only at launch. Live transit updates, Personal Intelligence, and conversation memory are available globally wherever Ask Maps is supported, now including six new countries. Ask Maps requires the latest version of Google Maps on Android or iOS.
